Preview Roundups
December 31, 2019
Boston at New Jersey 1:00 PM ET
The Boston Bruins managed to survive their worst rut of the season and are still maintaining a double-digit lead atop the Atlantic Division. The Bruins go for their fourth consecutive victory overall and look to complete a three-game season sweep of New Jersey when they close out the 2019 calendar year with a visit to the Devils on Tuesday afternoon.
NY Islanders at Washington 1:00 PM ET
The Washington Capitals have faced little resistance en route to recording an NHL-best 59 points this season, but they have found some in the form of opponent, injury and illness. The Capitals look to overcome all obstacles on Tuesday afternoon when they host the New York Islanders.
Anaheim at Vegas 3:00 PM ET
The first-place Vegas Golden Knights have a real chance to separate themselves from the Pacific Division pack as they continue their season-high seven-game homestand Tuesday against the Anaheim Ducks. Vegas took over first place in the Pacific with a 4-1 victory over Arizona on Saturday and gets a chance to exact revenge from the Ducks after a 4-3 loss Friday in Anaheim.
Toronto at Minnesota 6:00 PM ET
Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner have enjoyed instant chemistry while playing on the same line, with the duo combining for 11 points (five goals, six assists) in three games. The Toronto Maple Leafs aim to squeeze a bit more juice out of the pair on Tuesday when they carry a seven-game point streak (6-0-1) on the road to face the Minnesota Wild.
Tampa Bay at Buffalo 7:00 PM ET
The Tampa Bay Lightning righted their ship while spending a lot of time in the Sunshine State during December and look to continue their ascent in the standings when they go on the road for 12 of the next 15 contests. The Lightning won the last three games at home and are 6-2-1 in the past nine - eight played in the state of Florida - and begin a four-game trip Tuesday night against the Atlantic Division-rival Buffalo Sabres.
Montreal at Carolina 7:00 PM ET
The Carolina Hurricanes look to build off an important victory and continue their dominance in the series when they host the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night for a battle of Eastern Conference playoff hopefuls. The Hurricanes dropped three straight contests before outlasting NHL-best Washington 6-4 on Saturday and will go after an eighth victory in nine games against the Canadiens.
Florida at Columbus 7:00 PM ET
The Columbus Blue Jackets try to extend their point streak to 11 games Tuesday night, but will have to do it without injured No. 1 goalie Joonas Korpisalo when the Florida Panthers pay a visit. Korpisalo, who has played a big role in the Blue Jackets’ 6-0-4 run, suffered a knee injury during the shootout in Sunday’s 3-2 setback against Chicago and is expected to be out multiple weeks.
San Jose at Detroit 7:30 PM ET
The San Jose Sharks have not ventured away from home since a disastrous four-game road trip earlier this month that resulted in four losses and the dismissal of coach Peter DeBoer. The change behind the bench has not changed the fortunes of the Sharks, who will kick off a five-game road trip against the league-worst Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.
San Jose at Detroit 7:30 PM ET
The Edmonton Oilers have been atop the Pacific Division for much of the season, buoyed by a fast start in which the team won its first five games for the first time in 34 years. However, captain Connor McDavid and the Oilers are tumbling down the standings and will look to halt their tailspin against the visiting New York Rangers on Tuesday night.
Winnipeg at Colorado 8:00 PM ET
Two struggling Central Division teams look to end the 2019 portion of their schedules on an upswing Tuesday when the Colorado Avalanche host the Winnipeg Jets. The Avalanche are 2-4-1 in their past seven games following Saturday’s 3-2 shootout loss at Dallas and have allowed five goals or more three times, while the Jets are 1-4-1 in the past six contests and have lost three in a row after Sunday’s 4-1 setback at St. Louis.
Philadelphia at Los Angeles 9:00 PM ET
The Philadelphia Flyers were sprinting along with four consecutive wins before falling flat in the opener of their season-high six-game road trip. The Flyers regained their footing the following night and look to get back up to speed on Tuesday when they visit the Los Angeles Kings.
Chicago at Calgary 9:00 PM ET
The Calgary Flames try for their seventh straight victory over Chicago when they host the surging Blackhawks on Tuesday. Chicago has won four of its last five games after a 3-2 shootout victory over Columbus on Sunday and is only five points out of playoff position despite sitting last in the Central Division.
NY Rangers at Edmonton 9:00 PM ET
The Edmonton Oilers have been atop the Pacific Division for much of the season, buoyed by a fast start in which the team won its first five games for the first time in 34 years. However, captain Connor McDavid and the Oilers are tumbling down the standings and will look to halt their tailspin against the visiting New York Rangers on Tuesday night.
St. Louis at Arizona 9:00 PM ET
The defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues put their eight-game winning streak on the line when they start a three-game road trip Tuesday against the Arizona Coyotes. St. Louis, which leads the Central Division by eight points, has outscored its foes 33-16 during the run after a completing a home-and-home sweep of Winnipeg 4-1 on Sunday, invoking memories of their dash to the title.
