Preview Roundups
October 05, 2019
New Jersey at Buffalo 7:00 PM ET
One game does not a season make, but for a franchise that has finished in last place in the Atlantic Division in four of the past six seasons, the Buffalo Sabres have reason to be giddy after their first regulation win over Pittsburgh in 6 1/2 years. The Sabres look to improve to 2-0-0 under new coach Ralph Krueger when they host the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night.
Montreal at Toronto 7:00 PM ET
Mitch Marner has provided early returns on his six-year contract extension he signed last month, following up an assist in the season opener by scoring two goals and setting up another to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to their second straight win. Marner and the Maple Leafs aim to continue their strong start to the season on Saturday when they host the Montreal Canadiens.
NY Rangers at Ottawa 7:00 PM ET
Mika Zibanejad took center stage and offseason acquisitions Artemi Panarin and Jacob Trouba flourished in supporting roles as the New York Rangers received rave reviews on their first night on Broadway. Zibanejad looks to ride the momentum of a career high-tying four-point performance into a date against his former team on Saturday as the Rangers visit the Ottawa Senators.
Tampa Bay at Florida 7:00 PM ET
Captain Aleksander Barkov and his linemates look to rebound from a scoreless night when the Florida Panthers open their home schedule Saturday night by closing out a back-to-back with the rival Tampa Bay Lightning. Barkov, who registered a career-high 96 points last season, did not have a shot on net in Thursday’s 5-2 loss at Tampa Bay while linemates Jonathan Huberdeau and Evgenii Dadonov failed to post a point despite 10 combined shots.
Columbus at Pittsburgh 7:00 PM ET
The Pittsburgh Penguins hope to rebound from a very disappointing season opener when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday in a Metropolitan Division matchup. The Penguins gave up 41 shots and did not score at even strength while dropping a 3-1 decision against Buffalo on Thursday, with former Hart Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin telling reporters the team needs to play faster and be more hungry.
Carolina at Washington 7:00 PM ET
The Carolina Hurricanes recorded a comeback victory in their season opener and now test themselves against a pair of division winners in their next two games, starting with Saturday's road contest against the Washington Capitals. The Hurricanes gave up three straight goals in the second period to lose the lead on Thursday before registering 19 shots in the third and defeating Montreal 4-3 in a shootout.
Dallas at St. Louis 8:00 PM ET
The St. Louis Blues received a quick lesson in what every Stanley Cup champion must face -- the knowledge that every opponent will bring their best against them. After dropping their season opener to Washington to spoil a night in which they raised their championship banner, the Blues will face another highly motivated foe when they host the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.
Detroit at Nashville 8:00 PM ET
The Detroit Red Wings have missed the playoffs in each of the last three seasons after qualifying 25 straight times and will be hard-pressed to rejoin the party even with a faster start this year. Detroit lost its first seven games last season (0-5-2) and hopes to come out of the gate running when it visits the Nashville Predators on Saturday in its 2019-20 opener.
Boston at Arizona 9:00 PM ET
For a team that came within one win of claiming the Stanley Cup four months ago, the Boston Bruins did not receive much of a break from the schedule makers this season. Boston got off to a positive start on an opening four-game road trip that features three playoff teams from 2018-19 and will look to make it two wins in as many games at the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night.
Minnesota at Colorado 9:00 PM ET
Colorado's Mikko Rantanen is good enough to be the next Hart Trophy winner and the start to his season is the stuff of legend as the Avalanche prepare to host the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. Rantanen didn't play in the preseason, signed a six-year, $55.5 million contract last Saturday, arrived in Denver from his native Finland on Sunday, practiced with his team Monday for the first time and scored twice in Colorado's season-opening 5-3 victory over Calgary on Thursday.
San Jose at Anaheim 10:00 PM ET
The San Jose Sharks will be glad to face a new opponent when they visit the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday. San Jose began the season with a home-and-home series against Vegas and was outscored 9-2 while being swept.
Vancouver at Calgary 10:00 PM ET
The Calgary Flames ascended to the top of the Western Conference regular-season standings in 2018-19 due in large part to their dominant performance at Scotiabank Saddledome. The Flames look to rid the sour taste in their mouths after a season-opening loss with a bit of home cookin' on Saturday when they face off against the visiting Vancouver Canucks.
Los Angeles at Edmonton 10:00 PM ET
Connor McDavid helped make Dave Tippett's debut as coach of the Edmonton Oilers a successful one. The 22-year-old captain attempts to guide the Oilers to another victory when they host the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.
