Preview Roundups
January 05, 2020
San Jose at Washington 12:30 PM ET
Staring at the possibility of losing three straight in regulation for the first time this season, Washington Capitals coach Todd Reirden was not afraid to go with a backup plan Friday in Carolina. The move paid off and now Reirden will have No. 1 netminder Braden Holtby rested and ready for Sunday's matchup against the visiting San Jose Sharks.
Florida at Pittsburgh 5:00 PM ET
The Pittsburgh Penguins have used their success on home ice to help hide consistent injury issues this season and look to continue that trend when they host the Florida Panthers on Sunday. The Penguins boast the most victories in the league at home (16), gaining at least a point in five straight (4-0-1) at PPG Paints Arena, and improved to 8-1-1 overall in their past 10 games after a 3-2 overtime victory at Montreal on Saturday.
Tampa Bay at Carolina 5:00 PM ET
The Tampa Bay Lightning have built a season-high, six-game winning streak entirely against their own Atlantic Division foes and will finally try someone else Sunday when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes of the Metropolitan. The Lightning have won 14 straight against Atlantic Division opponents after rallying with three third-period goals for a 5-3 victory at Ottawa on Saturday, improving to 3-0-0 on a four-game road trip.
Calgary at Minnesota 7:00 PM ET
The Minnesota Wild followed their worst loss of the season - a 6-0 drubbing by Winnipeg on Dec. 21 - with a 3-0 victory over the Calgary Flames in their final game before the Christmas break. The Wild will look to complete a weekend sweep of the same two opponents when they host the Flames on Sunday night in the front end of a home-and-home.
Detroit at Chicago 7:30 PM ET
The Chicago Blackhawks were bidding to match a season-high winning streak and complete a perfect three-game road trip, only to be derailed by another shaky performance from their defense. The Blackhawks get a chance to start another streak when they open a four-game homestand against the league-worst Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night.
Nashville at Anaheim 10:00 PM ET
The Anaheim Ducks will look to end a three-game losing streak on Sunday when they host the Nashville Predators. The Ducks are 2-5-1 in their last eight games and continue to struggle finding the back of the net as their 102 goals scored this season are the second-fewest in the NHL.
