Preview Roundups
November 21, 2016
Tennessee at Wisconsin 2:30 PM ET
Tennessee corrected its shooting woes from 3-point distance in its most recent game, Wisconsin did not, forcing the No. 11 Badgers to try again Monday against the Vols in the first round of the Maui Invitational. Wisconsin shot 11-for-39 from 3-point range in a 79-67 loss Tuesday at No. 20 Creighton, then 5-of-19 in a 69-51 win Thursday against Chicago State, dropping the Badgers to 31 percent on the season.
Loyola-Chicago at Washington St. 3:00 PM ET
Washington State hoped to make some noise at the Paradise Jam tournament, but the Cougars have to settle for a fifth-place finish - at best - when they take on Loyola Chicago on Monday in the Virgin Islands. The Cougars were trounced by Creighton 103-77 in the first round before recovering to post an 87-63 victory over Montana.
Georgetown at Oregon 4:30 PM ET
Dillon Brooks is close to returning for No. 4 Oregon after undergoing offseason foot surgery, but whether that happens Monday in a Maui Invitational first-round game against Georgetown was undecided as of Saturday night. Brooks, a 6-foot-7 wing who last season became the first player in program history to reach 1,000 career points as a sophomore, averaged 16.7 points and 5.4 rebounds while starting all 38 games last season.
Illinois St. at Texas Christian 6:00 PM ET
TCU is having fun in the early part of the season, thanks in large part to first-year head coach Jamie Dixon. He leads the Horned Frogs in search of their fourth straight win to open the campaign Monday evening against a visiting Illinois State team that has split its first two games of the season.
St. Joseph's at N.C. State 6:00 PM ET
North Carolina State absorbed a humbling defeat on Sunday but has no time to feel sorry for itself. The Wolfpack are back at it on Monday, when they square off against Saint Joseph's in the third-place game of the Paradise Jam tournament in the Virgin Islands.
St. Francis (NY) at Providence 6:30 PM ET
Providence coach Ed Cooley said he's preparing for Monday's game as if it's the national championship. That could spell trouble for their next foe as the Friars host St. Francis (N.Y.) in an Emerald Coast Classic second-round game.
Belmont at Florida 7:00 PM ET
Florida, having escaped with a win against upset-minded St. Bonaventure, takes on another team that loves to shoot from long distance when it faces Belmont on Monday in Tampa, Fla., as part of the Advocare Invitational. The Gators scored the final seven points to win 73-66 after the Bonnies' top-two scorers had combined to hit nine 3-point shots and now face the Bruins, who drained 16 from beyond the arc in a 90-69 rout of Western Kentucky.
Georgia at George Washington 7:00 PM ET
Georgia finally got breakout performances at the same time from its two standouts – guard J.J. Frazier and forward Yante Maten – in Thursday’s victory over Furman, and the Bulldogs will look for that duo to lead the way again Monday against George Washington in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City. Frazier and Maten combined for 55 points and hit 13 free throws in the final seven minutes as the Bulldogs held on for an 84-78 victory.
Western Carolina at Ohio St. 7:00 PM ET
Ohio State looks to build on its biggest win of the young season when it hosts Western Carolina on Monday. The Buckeyes slogged their way to wins over Navy (78-68) and North Carolina Central (72-67) but looked sharp in the 72-67 victory against Providence as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games, and hope to ride the momentum to their sixth 4-0 start in the last seven seasons.
Notre Dame at Colorado 7:00 PM ET
Notre Dame and Colorado are both unranked and under the national radar despite impressive 3-0 starts. That could change with a successful trip to Brooklyn, N.Y., where the two teams will meet in the semifinals of the Legends Classic on Monday night.
George Mason at Houston 7:30 PM ET
Houston looks to stay unbeaten when it travels to Estero, Fla., to take on George Mason on Monday in the first round of the Gulf Coast Showcase. The Cougars won their only contest this season, routing Morgan State over a week ago, while the Patriots are coming off an overtime loss to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday.
Winthrop at Illinois 8:00 PM ET
A veteran-laden Illinois team has breezed through its early-season, non-conference slate as it readies for a trip to Barclays Center in Brooklyn later this week to play West Virginia and North Carolina State as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off. However, before it can focus fully on those two teams, the Fighting Illini will host a talented Winthrop squad Monday in the conclusion of the on-campus part of the preseason tournament.
Norfolk State at Butler 8:30 PM ET
Butler looks to move to 4-0 on the season when it hosts Norfolk State on Monday in a campus game of the Las Vegas Invitational. The Bulldogs have been impressive thus far, but they can't afford to look ahead to the semifinals in Las Vegas on Thanksgiving if they want to keep their winning streak going.
Mississippi at Creighton 8:30 PM ET
Deandre Burnett and Sebastian Saiz are proving to be quite a tandem for Ole Miss. Burnett and Saiz aim to lead the Rebels to the Paradise Jam title Monday, when they take on No. 20 Creighton in the final game of the eight-team event in the Virgin Islands.
Bucknell at Vanderbilt 9:00 PM ET
If nothing else, playing point guard is having a positive effect on the shot selection for Riley LaChance, who leads Vanderbilt into Monday's Las Vegas Invitational game against visiting Bucknell. After laboring through a sophomore season in which he shot less than 36 percent as a two-guard, LaChance is making the most of limited opportunities this season for the Commodores, who look to improve to 3-0 at home before heading to Las Vegas.
Northern Colorado at Arizona 9:00 PM ET
Talented freshmen Lauri Markkanen, Rawle Alkins and Kobi Simmons seem to be having no problem learning the system for No. 9 Arizona. The trio, who average a combined 47 points per game, will continue the process Monday when the Wildcats host Northern Colorado on Monday as part of the Las Vegas Invitational.
Oklahoma St. at Connecticut 9:00 PM ET
Monday’s first-round matchup at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational between Oklahoma State and Connecticut features a clash of styles with the Huskies looking to slow down the Cowboys’ up-tempo pace. Oklahoma State has crossed the 100-point mark in each of its first three games for the second time in school history, while UConn is holding opponents to 64.3 points per contest.
Texas at Northwestern 9:30 PM ET
Texas, which bounced back from a 2-3 start to finish 20-13 and earn a NCAA Tournament berth in Shaka Smart's first season as head coach, is off to a 3-0 start in Year Two. But the Longhorns, who cruised to home wins over Incarnate Word, Louisiana Monroe and Eastern Washington by an average of over 16 points, will step up in class when they face Northwestern on Monday night in the Legends Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Kansas at UAB 9:30 PM ET
Eighth-ranked Kansas has already experienced the brilliance of guards Frank Mason III and Devonte Graham this season, but coach Bill Self is looking for more consistency entering Monday’s matchup with UAB in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City. Mason and Graham combined for 31 points in Friday’s victory over Siena, but Self described their performance as “just average” to reporters afterward.
California at San Diego St. 11:00 PM ET
California hopes to have three injured starters back in the lineup Monday as the Bears face San Diego State at the new Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. Preseason All-American pick Ivan Rabb (toe), Jabari Bird (back) and Grant Mullins (neck) are expected to return against the Aztecs, who have had their own battles with the injury bug.
North Carolina at Chaminade 11:30 PM ET
North Carolina looks to continue its past dominance in Hawaii on Monday as the sixth-ranked Tar Heels tip off the Maui Invitational with a first-round matchup against Division II host Chaminade. The Tar Heels improved to 31-5 all-time in the 50th state on Friday as five players scored in double-figures in an 83-68 win over Hawaii in Honolulu.
Valparaiso at Alabama 11:59 PM ET
Long-range shooting was one of Alabama's weak spots in Avery Johnson's first season behind the bench, but a solid showing from beyond the arc last time out could be a sign of things to come. Johnson and the Crimson Tide will put that belief to the test Monday as they face Valparaiso as part of the Las Vegas Main Event.
