Preview Roundups
March 17, 2015
Hampton at Manhattan 6:40 PM ET
Manhattan is playing its best basketball at the right time as it prepares to face Hampton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio. The Jaspers have won four in a row and seven of eight, including a run to their second straight MAAC tournament title, and a victory over fellow 16th seed Hampton sets up a Midwest region second-round game against top-seeded Kentucky. The Pirates makes their fourth NCAA appearance after winning the MEAC tournament as the sixth seed.
George Washington at Pittsburgh 7:00 PM ET
George Washington rode hot late-season shooting to its second consecutive 20-victory season, and the Colonials hope to continue their good work from 3-point range in their NIT opener Tuesday at Pittsburgh. Sparked by the junior duo of Patricio Garino and Kevin Larsen, the Colonials have won four of their past six while hitting 48.6 percent of their 3-point attempts. The Panthers hope for a turnaround as the postseason begins, carrying a four-game losing streak into Tuesday.
North Carolina Central at Miami-Florida 7:00 PM ET
After falling short of an NCAA Tournament bid, Miami (Fla.) enters the NIT as a No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 seed North Carolina Central on Tuesday. Sophomore guard Davon Reed told the Miami Herald that the Hurricanes will have to shake off any lingering frustration from a season that began with eight straight wins before a mediocre 13-12 finish, if they hope to enjoy any level of postseason success. "We can't go back and make the NCAA Tournament," Reed told reporters. "I want to win."
William & Mary at Tulsa 8:15 PM ET
A disappointing end to the regular season left Tulsa on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, but the Golden Hurricane still have the opportunity to make a deep run in the NIT. Tulsa begins its NIT journey on Tuesday against visiting William & Mary, which fell one victory shy of its first ever trip to the Big Dance. The winner of this game will face either Murray State or UTEP in the second round of the 32-team event.
Montana at Texas A&M 9:00 PM ET
Texas A&M, which may have come the closest to handing unbeaten Kentucky a loss this season, will host Big Sky regular season co-champion Montana on Tuesday night in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament. The Aggies led by as many as 11 points in the first half before losing in double overtime to the Wildcats, 70-64, on Jan. 10 despite playing without second team All-SEC forward Jalen Jones.
Illinois at Alabama 9:00 PM ET
Alabama is playing in a postseason tournament for the fourth time in five years, but that wasn’t enough the save the job of coach Anthony Grant, who was fired Sunday. Grant finished with a six-year record of 117-85, and nine-year Grant assistant John Brannen will serve as the Crimson Tide’s interim coach for Tuesday night’s NIT first-round home game against Illinois. The Fighting Illini actually are the higher seed, but Illinois’ home arena is undergoing renovations and is unavailable.
Mississippi at Brigham Young 9:10 PM ET
BYU’s Kyle Collinsworth missed last year’s NCAA Tournament with an injury and gets a second chance when his Cougars take on Ole Miss in the first round Tuesday at Dayton, Ohio, in a battle of 11 seeds. Collinsworth, who set a NCAA single-season record with six triple-doubles, was a key factor along with Tyler Haws as BYU won eight of its last nine games. Ole Miss struggled to a 1-4 mark in its past five contests and gets a major test against the nation’s second-highest scoring team.
UC Davis at Stanford 11:00 PM ET
Stanford shot the ball well from beyond the 3-point arc this season, but the second-seeded Cardinal might get a lesson in efficiency when UC Davis pays a visit Tuesday night in the opening round of the NIT. The No. 7 Aggies enter the tournament as the top 3-point shooting team in the nation at 45 percent, a fair distance from runners-up Lafayette and Idaho (41.3). Stanford is just inside the top 40 from long distance at 38.3 percent, which was second-best in the Pac-12.
