Preview Roundups
January 25, 2015
South Florida at Connecticut 12:00 PM ET
Defending national champion Connecticut attempts to produce a balanced offensive attack for a second straight game when the Huskies host USF in an American Athletic Conference game Sunday. UConn is coming off a 67-60 victory over UCF on Thursday, a game in which the Huskies showed they could score from 3-point range and from inside the paint en route to snapping a two-game losing streak.
Boston College at Georgia Tech 1:00 PM ET
Georgia Tech looks for its first ACC win when it hosts fellow conference straggler Boston College on Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets have dropped six consecutive contests, including a 57-28 setback to No. 2 Virginia on Thursday in which they set an ACC record for fewest points scored in a conference game. Georgia Tech aims to beat the Eagles for the fourth consecutive time and avoid its first 0-7 start in ACC play since the 2001-02 season.
Virginia at Virginia Tech 1:00 PM ET
Virginia is playing defense at a level rarely seen in the modern era of college basketball. The second-ranked Cavaliers look to continue their unblemished season Sunday when they visit Virginia Tech in an ACC matchup. Virginia leads the nation in points allowed (49.3) and has given up fewer than 30 points three times this season - no other team has done it more than once - after defeating Georgia Tech 57-28 on Thursday.
Indiana at Ohio St. 1:30 PM ET
Indiana aims for its fifth straight win - and its second over Ohio State in 15 days - when the 23rd-ranked Hoosiers visit the Buckeyes for a Big Ten contest Sunday. The Hoosiers rebounded from their lone league loss to hand the Buckeyes a 69-66 defeat Jan. 10 at Indiana and have won three more since, including an 89-70 rout of No. 8 Maryland on Thursday. The Buckeyes have lost three straight against ranked opponents since topping No. 22 Michigan State last season.
Drake at Wichita St. 2:00 PM ET
Wichita State has won 25 straight games against Missouri Valley Conference foes, and it's unlikely the streak will end Sunday against visiting Drake. The 13th-ranked Shockers are the top team in the league standings and defeated Drake 66-58 on New Year's Eve, although they only led that contest by four with about two minutes left. The Bulldogs are 331st in the nation in scoring and 349th out of 351 Division I teams in rebounding.
Duke at St. John's 2:00 PM ET
Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski earned his 903rd career victory at Madison Square Garden in 2011 to become the winningest coach in NCAA history. The Hall of Fame coach returns to the venue in search of history again Sunday, hoping to become the first men’s basketball coach to reach 1,000 wins when his sixth-ranked Blue Devils visit St. John’s. Krzyzewski is no stranger to success at MSG as Duke has posted a 25-8 mark at New York’s famous arena under his guidance, with 17 victories in its last 20 visits.
Cincinnati at Central Florida 2:00 PM ET
Cincinnati will try to improve to 5-0 in the series against UCF when the Bearcats visit the Knights for an American Athletic Conference game Sunday. The Bearcats, coming off home victories against Temple (Jan. 17) and Houston (Wednesday), hope to extend their winning streak to three games. Cincinnati has limited opponents to 70 points or less in the last 22 games dating to last season, second to New Mexico's 23 for the nation’s longest active streak.
Seton Hall at Butler 3:00 PM ET
Roosevelt Jones raised his game when the Big East season began and has been the key figure in Butler’s upswing this month. Jones looks to stay hot Sunday after averaging 23 points in his last three games as the Bulldogs attempt to beat visiting Seton Hall for the fourth time in five meetings within one year. Jones recorded a team-high 23 points as Butler defeated the Pirates 79-75 in overtime on Jan. 13, handing 24th-ranked Seton Hall its first of two straight four-point defeats at home.
Northern Iowa at Illinois St. 4:00 PM ET
Northern Iowa looks to keep pace in the Missouri Valley Conference race when it visits Illinois State on Sunday. The 19th-ranked Panthers have won six straight games - including a 66-60 victory over Indiana State that extended their home winning streak to 13 - to stay within a game of No. 13 Wichita State. Northern Iowa has held its last six opponents to 60 or fewer points and hopes to avenge a 76-65 loss to the Redbirds in Normal, Ill. last season.
Louisville at Pittsburgh 4:00 PM ET
Two losses in the last three games haven’t dampened Louisville coach Rick Pitino’s enthusiasm for his team or its potential to make a deep run in March. The 10th-ranked Cardinals hope to rebound from a rocky stretch on Sunday when they visit Pittsburgh. Pitino said in Wednesday’s ACC teleconference that he has seen “remarkable improvement in all our young guys and I am getting much more comfortable using them” in the seven days Louisville had off since losing at home to Duke last Saturday.
Notre Dame at N.C. State 6:30 PM ET
Notre Dame has won its first three road games in conference play for the first time in program history and the No. 9 Fighting Irish will try to make it four in a row Sunday at North Carolina State. Notre Dame also owns its best 20-game record since the 1973-74 season and its 6-1 mark in league play is its best since 2002-03. N.C. State, meanwhile, will be trying to avoid losing two in a row for the first time this season, something the Wolfpack have pulled off six times this season.
Creighton at Villanova 7:00 PM ET
Fourth-ranked Villanova attempts to bounce back from a shellacking when it hosts struggling Creighton on Sunday in Big East play. The Wildcats suffered a 78-58 beat down at the hands of Georgetown on Monday in a contest in which they were dominated in all facets of the game. “We’ve got to go back to work to keep getting better,” Villanova coach Jay Wright told reporters. “There’s a lot of time, it’s still early enough in the season.”
Northwestern at Maryland 7:30 PM ET
Eighth-ranked Maryland, which hasn't lost back-to-back games all season, will try to keep that streak intact when it hosts Northwestern in a Big Ten Conference game on Sunday. It marks the first visit to College Park for the Wildcats, who will be out to snap a five-game losing streak. The last four of those defeats have been by an average of four points, including a 84-77 overtime loss at Michigan State and a 69-67 home loss to Ohio State on Thursday.
Washington at Utah 8:30 PM ET
Utah seeks its 15th consecutive home victory when it hosts streaking Washington on Sunday. The No. 11 Utes are 12-0 at home this season while emerging as one of the better teams in the Pac-12 and are coming off an 86-64 trouncing of Washington State on Wednesday. The Huskies have won three consecutive games and edged Colorado 52-50 on Thursday when guard Andrew Andrews knocked down a jumper with one second remaining.
