Preview Roundups
September 20, 2019
St. Louis at Chi. Cubs 2:20 PM ET
Just when it appeared that the gremlins of Wrigley Field were about to swallow up the St. Louis Cardinals again, a dramatic home run kept them in control of the National League Central. After overcoming a ninth-inning collapse for their first win at Wrigley this season, the Cardinals resume their four-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Friday afternoon.
Toronto at NY Yankees 7:05 PM ET
Having wrapped up their first American League East title since 2012 courtesy of their 100th win of the season on Thursday, the New York Yankees still have some unfinished business. New York resumes its bid for home-field advantage in the playoffs when it hosts the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday for the opener of its final home series of the regular season.
Seattle at Baltimore 7:05 PM ET
Felix Hernandez attempts to post a victory for the first time since April 1 when the Seattle Mariners open a three-game series against the host Baltimore Orioles on Friday. Hernandez has gone 0-6 over his other 12 starts as what probably will be his final season with the team nears an end.
Boston at Tampa Bay 7:10 PM ET
The Tampa Bay Rays are loaded with confidence as they begin a six-game homestand with the first of four against the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Tampa Bay returns to Tropicana Field after a 4-4 road trip left them tied with Cleveland for the final wild card spot in the American League and two games behind first-place Oakland with nine to play.
Philadelphia at Cleveland 7:10 PM ET
The Cleveland Indians hope to take advantage of their final home series of the season when they host the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a three-game interleague set Friday night. The Indians capped a three-game sweep of major league-worst Detroit with a 7-0 victory Thursday to move into a tie with idle Tampa Bay for the final American League wild-card spot and improve to 47-31 at Progressive Field.
NY Mets at Cincinnati 7:10 PM ET
The New York Mets are still doing everything they can to stay in the wild card race, but are running out of time. The Mets will try to continue taking advantage of a break in the schedule when they visit the sub-.500 Cincinnati Reds on Friday for the opener of a three-game series.
Washington at Miami 7:10 PM ET
The Washington Nationals are trying to fight off a pair of teams from the National League Central in the NL wild card race and get the benefit of playing the worst team in the league this weekend. The Nationals will try to pad their advantage in the wild card race when they visit the Miami Marlins on Friday for the opener of a three-game series.
Chi. White Sox at Detroit 7:10 PM ET
Yoan Moncada has taken a step forward this season and looks to record his 12th multi-hit performance in 15 games when the Chicago White Sox open a three-game series against the host Detroit Tigers on Friday. Moncada has gone a torrid 29-for-62 (.468) - and scored 13 runs - during the stretch to raise his season average to .312.
San Francisco at Atlanta 7:20 PM ET
Ronald Acuna Jr. hit just .203 during an 18-game stretch as perhaps the pressure of chasing a 40-homer, 40-steal season impacted him, but the Atlanta Braves outfielder has moved closer to history - while moving his team to the verge of a division title - entering Friday’s home game with the San Francisco Giants. Acuna belted his 40th homer in Thursday’s 5-4 victory over Philadelphia, reducing Atlanta’s magic number to win its second straight National League East crown to one.
LA Angels at Houston 8:10 PM ET
The Houston Astros look to extend their winning streak to six games and move closer to clinching their third straight American League West title when they host the injury-plagued Los Angeles Angels on Friday for the opener of a three-game series. The Astros knocked off Texas 3-2 on Wednesday to become the sixth team in major league history to post at least 100 victories in three straight seasons.
Pittsburgh at Milwaukee 8:10 PM ET
With some ground to make up in the National League Central and a division rival refusing to go away in the wild-card chase, the Milwaukee Brewers could use a bit of help from the schedule to give themselves a bit of margin for error. The Brewers could very well get that beginning Friday, as they seek a fourth straight win over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of their three-game set.
Kansas City at Minnesota 8:10 PM ET
After briefly giving up the major-league lead in home runs, the Minnesota Twins regained it Thursday while improving to 3-1 on their seven-game homestand. The club attempts to continue its slugging ways when it hosts the Kansas City Royals on Friday for the second contest of their four-game series.
Texas at Oakland 10:07 PM ET
The Oakland Athletics begin the final home series of the regular season in the driver's seat for the American League wild card and hope to start it off right when they host the Texas Rangers on Friday for the first of three games. A walk-off 1-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday gave the Athletics a two-game lead for the top wild-card spot with nine to play.
Arizona at San Diego 10:10 PM ET
The Arizona Diamondbacks were already a longshot to make the playoffs, and they are facing the possibility of trying to make an unlikely postseason push without their best player. With Ketel Marte sidelined indefinitely, the Diamondbacks begin their last road series of the season Friday when they visit the San Diego Padres for the first of three games.
Colorado at LA Dodgers 10:10 PM ET
The Los Angeles Dodgers open their final home series of the regular season Friday against the Colorado Rockies still eyeing home-field advantage throughout the National League playoffs. With a day off following an extra-inning loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, the Dodgers own a 4 1/2-game lead over Atlanta for the best record in the NL and are two games back of Houston for the top mark in the majors.
