Pittsburgh at Chi. Cubs 4:05 PM ET
The Chicago Cubs continue their push for at least a National League wild card spot when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday afternoon in the opener of a three-game series. Chicago, which is tied with Milwaukee for the second wild card and four games behind first-place St. Louis in the Central Division, has seven games remaining against the Cardinals and a total of nine versus Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.
Atlanta at Washington 7:05 PM ET
The Washington Nationals have one last desperate shot to try and get back into the National League East race as they host the Atlanta Braves for a three-game series beginning Friday, and hope the results are better than last weekend’s matchup. The division-leading Braves took three of four from the Nationals in Atlanta and come into Friday with an 8 1/2-game advantage in the standings after splitting four contests in Philadelphia, even after the Nationals beat Minnesota 12-6 on Thursday.
NY Yankees at Toronto 7:07 PM ET
Even as the New York Yankees move closer to wrapping up the American League East title, health issues continue to bedevil the team as three more players exited Thursday's doubleheader sweep in Detroit. New York will be without catcher Gary Sanchez and designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion when they open a three-game series at the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.
Minnesota at Cleveland 7:10 PM ET
The Cleveland Indians look to tighten things up in the race for the American League Central title when they host the first-place Minnesota Twins on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series. The Indians have won four straight after a 5-1 road trip to pull within 3 1/2 games of the Twins in the division and are one-half game behind Tampa Bay for the AL’s second wild card as they start of stretch of nine consecutive contests at home.
Baltimore at Detroit 7:10 PM ET
The Baltimore Orioles are one defeat away from losing 100 games for the second consecutive season but they still do not own the worst record in the major leagues. That dubious honor belongs to the Detroit Tigers, who also have the worst home record in baseball entering the opener of a four-game series against the visiting Orioles on Friday night.
LA Dodgers at NY Mets 7:10 PM ET
With key injuries to the two teams in front of them in the National League wild-card race, the New York Mets may be getting a second chance to make a postseason run following a dreadful stretch that appeared to signal the beginning of the end. The Mets continue their 10-game run against NL West opponentt when they host the opener of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.
Oakland at Texas 8:05 PM ET
The Oakland Athletics are alone atop the American League wild-card standings entering the first of three games at the Texas Rangers on Friday. After enduring a 15-0 loss to begin a four-game set at Houston, the Athletics bounced back to win the next three against the Astros, including Thursday's 3-2 nail-biter.
Milwaukee at St. Louis 8:15 PM ET
A season high-tying seven-game winning streak has catapulted the Milwaukee Brewers into a tie for the second wild-card spot in the National League, although manager Craig Counsell's club has a different target in mind this weekend. The visiting Brewers bid to trim their deficit in the NL Central on Friday in the opener of a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Houston at Kansas City 8:15 PM ET
Gerrit Cole attempts to win his 13th straight decision when the Houston Astros open a three-game series against the host Kansas City Royals on Friday. Cole has posted a 1.97 ERA during an 18-start unbeaten streak that has followed a loss to the Chicago White Sox on May 22.
San Diego at Colorado 8:40 PM ET
The Colorado Rockies host the San Diego Padres for a three-game series beginning Friday as they play out the string in a season that many thought could end with a third straight wild card berth. Colorado (62-85) is last in the National League West, but its superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado continues to provide his typical gold glove defense and booming bat.
Cincinnati at Arizona 9:40 PM ET
The Arizona Diamondbacks were scorching hot as they made a charge toward a wild card in the National League but have cooled down significantly thanks to a rival for one of the spots. Arizona attempts to remain in the race when it hosts the Cincinnati Reds on Friday for the opener of their three-game series.
Tampa Bay at LA Angels 10:07 PM ET
The Tampa Bay Rays haven't done much losing over the last two weeks, but the few defeats they have suffered are coming at a poor time for a club trying to end a five-year postseason drought. The Rays begin a critical five-game West Coast road trip on Friday, when they visit the Los Angeles Angels for the opener of a three-game series.
Chi. White Sox at Seattle 10:10 PM ET
Kyle Lewis is making a huge impression during his brief fling in the majors and looks to make some history when the Seattle Mariners host the Chicago White Sox on Friday for the opener of their three-game series. Lewis went deep for the third straight game during Thursday's 11-5 loss to Cincinnati and will look to join Colorado's Trevor Story (2016) as the only players to homer in each of their first four major-league contests.
Miami at San Francisco 10:15 PM ET
The Miami Marlins couldn't wait to leave South Florida in their rearview mirror after a dismal homestand, an unfortunate scenario that the San Francisco Giants know all too well in the Bay Area. The Giants have lost nine of their last 11 contests at Oracle Park heading into the opener of a three-game series against the visiting Marlins.
