Preview Roundups
July 25, 2020
Milwaukee at Chi. Cubs 1:05 PM ET
Ian Happ spent nearly the first four months of the 2019 season in the minors before he was promoted by the Chicago Cubs in the final week of July. While Happ was hitless in his first series at Milwaukee following the recall, he ensured things will be different this season and looks to lead Chicago to a second straight victory over the visiting Brewers on Saturday afternoon.
Baltimore at Boston 1:35 PM ET
The Boston Red Sox were among the teams that had their playoff hopes grow with the announcement of Major League Baseball's expanded postseason on Thursday and showed off the formula to get them there by clubbing the Baltimore Orioles in the opener on Friday. The Red Sox will try to keep the hits coming when they host the Orioles in the second of a three-game series on Saturday.
Minnesota at Chi. White Sox 2:10 PM ET
The Minnesota Twins shattered the major league record by swatting 307 home runs in 2019, a mark that outfielder Max Kepler predicted would have been eclipsed if not for the abbreviated 60-game season. The Twins wasted no time showing how potent their lineup is in a season-opening win and look to continue the offensive barrage against the host Chicago White Sox on Saturday afternoon.
Pittsburgh at St. Louis 2:15 PM ET
Jack Flaherty continued his dominance against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2020 opener. Next up is rejuvenated Adam Wainwright, who will try to get the Cardinals to 2-0 for the first time since 2012 when he faces the visiting Pirates in the second game of a three-game series.
Toronto at Tampa Bay 3:10 PM ET
The Toronto Blue Jays finally found a home to play in on Friday and then went out and won their season opener - on the road. The Blue Jays will try to make it two in a row to begin the season when they visit the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday in the second of a three-game series.
Miami at Philadelphia 4:05 PM ET
The Miami Marlins haven't gotten the better of many teams in recent years, but they sure do seem to fluster the Philadelphia Phillies. The Marlins look to continue their good fortune against their National League East rivals on Saturday when they play the second contest of the three-game series in Philadelphia.
Colorado at Texas 4:05 PM ET
The Texas Rangers christened Globe Life Field in style and will try to make it two straight victories over the visiting Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Colorado's German Marquez took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Danny Santana hit a one-out double and scored on Rougned Odor's two-out, two-bagger in the Rangers' 1-0 victory.
Atlanta at NY Mets 4:10 PM ET
Yoenis Cespedes played in his first major league game Friday since July 20, 2018, and the New York Mets' designated hitter provided all the offense heading into Saturday’s contest with the visiting Atlanta Braves. Sidelined by leg and ankle injuries for two years, Cespedes launched a solo homer to left off Chris Martin with one out in the seventh inning of New York’s 1-0 victory, finishing 1-for-3 to propel the Mets to their 12th opening day triumph in the past 15 years.
LA Angels at Oakland 4:10 PM ET
Fully healthy Sean Manaea aims to get his campaign off to a good start when the Oakland Athletics host the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday in the middle contest of a three-game series. Manaea missed most of last season after shoulder surgery but was electric in five starts after his return by striking out 30 and allowing only 16 hits in 29 2/3 innings.
Seattle at Houston 4:10 PM ET
Two right-handers hoping to bounce back from major arm injuries square off when the Houston Astros host the Seattle Mariners on Saturday in the second contest of a four-game series. Houston's Lance McCullers Jr. will take the mound for the first time since the 2018 postseason while Seattle's Taijuan Walker will pitch for the second time in 27 months.
San Francisco at LA Dodgers 4:10 PM ET
In a truly unusual season filled with cardboard cutouts and so much more, the Los Angeles Dodgers are proving to be as dependable as ever. After turning in dominant performances in back-to-back wins, the Dodgers continue their four-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants on Saturday.
Kansas City at Cleveland 5:10 PM ET
Mike Clevinger looks to continue his mastery in the series when he takes the mound for the Cleveland Indians against the visiting Kansas City Royals on Saturday for the second of a three-game series. Clevinger, who has recovered from knee surgery in February, is a gaudy 9-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 13 career contests (12 starts) versus the Royals.
Detroit at Cincinnati 5:10 PM ET
Luis Castillo set the bar high on the heels of his breakout season in 2019, claiming that he'd like to capture the National League Cy Young Award in 2020 and have the Cincinnati Reds qualify for the playoffs. The right-hander aims to take the first step toward both of those goals on Saturday when the Reds continue their series versus the Detroit Tigers.
NY Yankees at Washington 7:15 PM ET
Following a rain-shortened season opener and then a day off, the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals resume their three-game series Saturday in the nation's capital. The Yankees opened Major League Baseball's abbreviated season with a 4-1 win over the defending champs Thursday night in a game cut short in the sixth inning by rain.
Arizona at San Diego 9:10 PM ET
Eric Hosmer has been moderately productive since signing with the San Diego Padres about 2 1/2 years ago, but has fallen short of justifying the eight-year, $144 million contract he was handed. The one-time All-Star looked every bit worth the investment in the season opener, however, and will try to follow up one of the most productive performances of his career Saturday when the Padres host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second contest of a four-game set.
