The Washington Nationals welcome the return of three-time Cy Young Award recipient Max Scherzer on Thursday afternoon when they bid for a four-game series sweep of the visiting Colorado Rockies. Scherzer posted a sizzling 7-0 mark with an 0.84 ERA and 94 strikeouts during a nine-game stretch before being sidelined with an inflamed bursa sac in his back/shoulder.

The Boston Red Sox continue a stretch that could define their season when they host the New York Yankees for a four-game series beginning Thursday. Boston is 6-4 during a stretch of 21 consecutive games versus American League East opponents, including 2-1 in a string of 14 straight against New York and Tampa Bay after losing 3-2 to the Rays on Wednesday, and will try to improve on its 1-6 record against the Yankees this season.

Minnesota Twins All-Star right-hander Jose Berrios will attempt to halt a seven-start winless stretch when he takes the mound against the host Chicago White Sox on Thursday in the opener of a four-game series. Berrios is 0-3 in that span and hasn't notched a victory since June 6 against the Cleveland Indians.

The Cleveland Indians look to continue their torrid performance when they open a four-game set against the host Kansas City Royals on Thursday. Cleveland has won nine of its past 11 games and 30 of its last 42 to move a season-high 17 games above .500.

After making a statement with a series sweep of the National League’s best team, the Los Angeles Angels look to avoid a letdown Thursday when they begin a four-game series against the visiting Baltimore Orioles. Mike Trout has 11 home runs in his last 14 games to lead the Angels, who improved to 9-3 since the All-Star break with back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
