It was the ninth straight victory for the Sharks over the Canadiens, five at Montreal.

Kevin Labanc and Melker Karlsson also scored for San Jose.

Aaron Dell made 35 saves for the Sharks, who have a win and an overtime loss in the first two games of a five-game trip.

Nick Cousins and Joel Armia scored for the Canadiens, who have lost two in a row.

Carey Price made 19 saves for the Canadiens.

The Sharks had an early goal called back after video review upheld the Canadiens' challenge that the play was offside.

Cousins gave Montreal the lead at 16:36 of the first period with his first goal this season. It came on a two-on-one with Brendan Gallagher on his right. Dell stopped the shot by Cousins, who kicked the rebound back onto his stick and banked the puck off the post into the net.

Kane tied the score at 19:05 on a power play when Logan Couture's shot from the right circle deflected off his skate. Shea Weber was off for hooking.

Kane struck again on the power play at 4:54 of the second period with his sixth goal of the season, going to the backhand to knock in the rebound of a shot by Brent Burns. Jeff Petry was serving a tripping penalty.

San Jose took a 3-1 lead on Labanc's third goal this season at 8:08 of the second period on a shot from the lower edge of the left circle.

Dell was forced to make several saves on a Canadiens power play with Burns penalized for holding at 13:26 of the second.

Karlsson scored his first this season at 19:24 of the second on a pass from Joe Thornton, who won the puck in the neutral zone.

Montreal pulled within two goals 22 seconds later when Armia deflected Max Domi's long shot for his fifth goal.
