Kyle Connor and Patrik Laine scored in a shootout to give the host Winnipeg Jets a 1-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.

The Jets snapped a three-game losing skid while giving coach Paul Maurice his 700th NHL victory. Maurice, 52, is 700-624 with 99 ties and 116 overtime losses in 22 seasons as an head coach for the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg.

Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped 28 shots through regulation and overtime to earn his first shutout of the season.

Edmonton's two skaters in the shootout, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Connor McDavid, missed their attempts wide of the net.

Connor fired a blocker-side shot past Oilers goalie Mike Smith for his shootout marker, and then Laine -- who is 8-for-15 in shootouts in his career -- also tallied blocker side.

Smith finished with 23 saves through regulation and overtime.

Three of Winnipeg's five victories this season have come in games that extended beyond regulation.

Despite the low score, the game wasn't exactly a goalie's duel. The Jets managed only two shots on goal in the first period, repeatedly missing the net despite some golden chances. The Oilers managed to get seven pucks on net in the opening frame. The second period was only marginally better, but still lacking scoring chances and emotion.

The pace of play increased after the second intermission, but it didn't translate into goals, and then the clubs found a high gear in the three-on-three overtime. In overtime alone, Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl and McDavid couldn't convert on a couple of two-on-one rushes, and then McDavid was denied on a breakaway.

Winnipeg's Carl Dahlstrom thought he had opened the scoring with 11:33 remaining in the third period -- which would have been his first NHL goal in his 56th career game -- but the Oilers successfully challenged for an offside ruling.

The victory wasn't the only good news on the day for Winnipeg. Second-line center Bryan Little returned to the lineup after missing the first nine games due to a concussion sustained in the final preseason game. Little had two shots on goal in 16:17 of ice time.

The Pacific Division-leading Oilers also saw Draisaitl's season-opening, eight-game point scoring streak snapped.
