Alex Lyon made 29 saves and Patrick Kane scored in the first period as the visiting Detroit Red Wings earned a 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night in Elmont, N.Y.

After being outscored 9-3 in a home-and-home with the New York Rangers last week, the Red Wings earned their second straight win thanks to Lyon, who began this season third on the depth chart.

Lyon earned his fourth career shutout and third for the Red Wings. He made eight saves in the first and 14 in the second before stopping seven more in the third.

Lyon allowed three goals on Oct. 14 in his season debut -- a 4-1 loss to the Rangers. But he has stopped 81 of 83 shots in his past three appearances.

Lyon stopped Brock Nelson on a 2-on-1 about three minutes into the contest and then made a diving glove save at the right post with about 16 minutes left in the second period. During New York's second power play, late in the second period, Lyon made five saves -- denying Anders Lee twice in the crease and then stopping Noah Dobson, Nelson and Mike Reilly.

His final big save occurred with about 10 minutes left in the third, when he denied Simon Holmstrom on an odd-man rush.

Lyon was aided by a defense that clamped down in the final minutes and prevented the Islanders from getting sustained pressure in the offensive zone after goalie Ilya Sorokin was pulled for the extra attacker.

Kane scored on the first of Detroit's 11 shots on goalie Ilya Sorokin, teaming up with Vladimir Tarasenko with 11:06 left in the opening period.

Tarasenko moved into the offensive zone and slipped past Jean-Gabriel Pageau behind the red line. He threaded a pass to Kane, who beat Lee to the loose puck and lifted a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle over Sorokin's stick for his first goal of the season.

In their first game since losing Anthony Duclair to a right leg injury that is "more long-term than short-term," according to general manager Lou Lamoriello, the Islanders were blanked for the third time in their first six games and took their first home regulation loss to Detroit since Dec. 19, 2017.

Sorokin stopped 10 shots.
