Patrick Kane scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway at 1:43 of overtime to lift the visiting Detroit Red Wings past the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Sunday in Kane's return to Chicago.

Kane added an assist and Daniel Sprong and Alex DeBrincat also scored to help Detroit extend its winning streak to five games. Goaltender James Reimer stopped 33 shots.

A former league and playoff MVP who helped the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups during his 15-plus seasons before his February 2023 trade to the New York Rangers, Kane stretched his point streak to eight games.

Kane received a salute from Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Chelios during a pregame ceremony in which the Blackhawks retired Chelios' No. 7. A sellout crowd gave Kane a lengthy standing ovation when a video tribute was shown following a stoppage early in the first period.

He shifted the mood a few hours later -- at least for some. The United Center crowd cheered Kane on a final ovation lap following the game-winner. The Blackhawks turned aside a Red Wings rush led by Kane late in regulation.

MacKenzie Entwistle and Nick Foligno scored and Petr Mrazek made 28 saves for Chicago, which has lost four in a row but picked up a point for the second straight game.

Sprong tallied the first goal of the night with 41 seconds remaining in the first period, beating Mrazek as he fell to the ice after eluding a check near the left circle.

Entwistle scored the equalizer at 3:29 of the second, burying the puck into an opening after a scramble below the goal line drew Reimer out of the net.

Chicago took a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at 17:52 of the second. A Connor Bedard wrist shot from in front of the net deflected off Foligno's upper body and into the net. The advantage held up until 15:44 of the third, when DeBrincat -- another former Blackhawk -- banked a shot from behind the net off Mrazek's pad and into the net.

Kane was credited with an assist on the play.
