David Perron scored twice, including the winning goal with 90 seconds remaining in regulation, to pace the visiting Detroit Red Wings' 5-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.
Daniel Sprong netted one goal and one assist, while J.T. Compher and Michael Rasmussen also scored for the Red Wings, who kicked off a three-game California road trip on a winning note. Goaltender Alex Lyon made 24 saves and Lucas Raymond collected three assists.
Fabian Zetterlund, Justin Bailey and Alexander Barabanov scored for the Sharks, who have the fewest points in the league and are in the throes of a nine-game skid. Goalie Kaapo Kahkonen stopped 26 shots.
With overtime looming, Perron sent a pass to the front of the net, and the puck ricocheted off a defender's skate into the cage for his ninth goal of the season.
Rasmussen added an empty-net goal.
It was a wild finish to a back-and-forth game that saw both teams claim and then surrender a lead.
Sprong's power-play goal opened the scoring at the 6:11 mark of the first period. Off a face-off win, Sprong set up shop in the slot and ripped a one-timer set up by Raymond for his 10th of the season.
Zetterlund responded at 16:50 with his 11th of the campaign, a rebound marker that trickled over the line during a flurry.
Compher gave the Red Wings another lead at 6:07 of the second period thanks to a long shot that squeezed through Kahkonen for his ninth goal of the season.
However, Bailey again drew the Sharks even when he netted his second of the season with 66 seconds remaining in the middle frame. Bailey went to the net as Mario Ferraro sent a point shot that Bailey perfectly deflected home to tie the score 2-2.
Barabanov gave the Sharks their first lead of the night at 9:24 of the third period when he zipped a shot from the right face-off dot for his second goal of the season and 100th career point.
But Perron netted Detroit's second power-play goal of the game 91 seconds later by unloading a one-timer.
