Marner scored his 15th goal at the 24-second mark of the second period during a power play. He went to one knee on his sharp-angle shot from below the left circle on a rebound off the end barrier from Matthews' wide shot. Jonatan Berggren was serving a crosschecking penalty that carried over from the first period.
Tavares scored his 17th goal at 6:37 of the second from the low slot, going from his backhand to his forehand. Calle Jarnkrok made a backhand saucer pass to Tavares after taking a quick outlet pass from Mark Giordano.
Detroit had an 18-14 advantage in shots on goal after two periods.
Hellberg made a big save on Matthews after a setup by Marner at 2:35 of the third period during a Toronto power play.
Holmberg tipped in Rielly's shot for his fourth goal of the season at 6:19 of the third to make it 3-1.
