Jack Eichel scored a power play goal with 5.2 seconds remaining to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night in Las Vegas.
Eichel picked up a rebound of a Max Pacioretty shot in the left circle and then fired a wrist shot inside the near left post and past goalie Anton Forsberg's blocker for his third goal of the season. The goal snapped an 0-for-17 drought for the Golden Knights on the power play and was just their fifth third period goal in 11 games since the All Star Game break.
Jonathan Marchessault scored a goal for the third straight game and also had an assist for Vegas, which improved to just 5-6-3 in its last 14 home games. Robin Lehner tied his season high with 39 saves.
Brady Tkachuk scored for Ottawa, which lost its fifth straight game. Forsberg finished with 40 saves.
Vegas took a 1-0 lead at the 6:46 mark of the second period on Marchessault's team-leading 24th goal of the season. The score came after Ottawa defenseman Erik Brannstrom, a former Golden Knights draft pick, attempted a shot from the right point that Reilly Smith blocked.
The puck squirted past Brannstrom to Marchessault, who scooped it up and went in on a breakaway, beating Forsberg high on his glove side.
Ottawa tied it 2:07 later on Tkachuk's 18th goal of the season. The score came on a power play on a quick snap shot in the low slot off a Colin White setup that trickled through Lehner's pads.
The Senators, coming off a wild 8-5 loss at Arizona on Saturday, had a chance to take the lead early in the third period but Lehner came up with a glove save on Zach Sanford's point-blank wrist shot from the low slot. Ottawa outshot Vegas, 13-2, over the first 11 minutes of the third period, holding the Golden Knights without a shot on goal for over nine minutes during one stretch.
Eichel's game-winner came after defenseman Thomas Chabot was called for a tripping penalty on Michael Amadio with 45.1 seconds left.
