Moritz Seider scored with 1:27 left in overtime Saturday night as the host Detroit Red Wings beat the New York Islanders, 4-3.
Seider's shot from the left faceoff circle caromed off the far post and bounced back toward the faceoff circle to provide an exclamation point on the Red Wings' fifth straight win. It marked the 10th straight loss for the Islanders, who have gone 0-8-2 while being ravaged by injuries and a COVID-19 outbreak.
Filip Hronek, Sam Gagner and Givani Smith also scored for the Red Wings. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic made 20 saves.
Cal Clutterbuck scored a short-handed goal in the first and Oliver Wahlstrom collected a pair of power play goals for the Islanders, who entered Saturday with the worst power play percentage (10.2 percent, 5-for-49) in the NHL.
Goalie Ilya Sorokin recorded 26 saves as the Islanders earned a point for the second straight game yet matched their longest losing streak since they also went 0-8-2 from Nov. 19 through Dec. 9, 2013.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau won a faceoff to set up Clutterbuck's impressive short-handed goal just 2:45 into the first. Clutterbuck took the puck from Pageau while play was still in the New York zone, raced up the left side of the ice with the puck at stick length and headed to the crease, where he got a forehand shot past Nedeljkovic.
Red Wings center Michael Rasmussen won a faceoff in the Islanders' zone to set up Hronek's tying goal fewer than three minutes later. Detroit's Carter Rowney wrested control of the puck from Anthony Beauvillier to set up Gagner's go-ahead tally a mere 2:19 later.
Wahlstrom scored his first power play goal 10:49 into the second, when there were five players lined up in front of Nedeljkovic before the Islanders' right winger fired a shot that went beyond the goalie's stick.
Smith batted down Scott Mayfield's pass and skated up the left side of the ice before scoring the unassisted goal with 6:41 left in the period.
Wahlstrom scored again on the power play with 7:27 left in regulation, when he took a pass from Mathew Barzal and fired a shot under Nedeljkovic's stick.
