Patrice Bergeron matched a franchise record with a trio of power-play goals and scored four total to help the Boston Bruins skate past the visiting Detroit Red Wings 5-1 on Thursday night.

Bergeron had been held without a goal during the Bruins' first seven games before lighting the lamp once in the opening period, twice in the second and once in the third to record his seventh career hat trick.

It was the second career four-goal game for Bergeron and his first since Jan. 6, 2018, against Carolina. Brad Marchand assisted on all four goals.

The Bruins' captain became the fifth player in team history to record a hat trick at age 36 or older, joining Hall of Famer Johnny Bucyk (six times), Jean Ratelle, Dit Clapper and Dave Andreychuk.

Mike Reilly also scored for the Bruins, who secured their second straight win after ending Florida's unbeaten 8-0-0 start with a 3-2 shootout victory last Saturday. Boston rookie goalie Jeremy Swayman recorded 14 saves.

Red Wings rookie Lucas Raymond scored his fifth goal for his team-leading 10th point. Thomas Greiss stopped 32 shots for Detroit, which suffered its fourth straight loss after winning four of seven to open the season.

Bergeron's first tally came five seconds into a power play on a one-timer from the left circle off a one-touch pass from Marchand at 11:03 of the first.

He scored again on another power play at 10:52 of the second, gliding through the slot into the right circle and beating Greiss on a wrist shot following Marchand's pass from behind the net.

On another power play, Bergeron's one-timer from the high slot off another touch pass by Marchand from the right circle gave him his second-ever natural hat trick to put the Bruins up 3-0 with 1:15 left in period two.

Raymond's power-play strike on a one-timer from the left circle put the Red Wings on the board at 7:46 of the third. Reilly answered with a shorthanded goal 24 seconds later before Bergeron scored off another Marchand assist at 15:52.
