Connor McDavid had two assists and a spectacular game-winning goal as the Edmonton Oilers recorded a 4-1 victory over the visiting Montreal Canadiens on Monday night.
With the score 1-1 at 15:11 in the third period, McDavid took the puck at his own blue line and delivered a highlight-reel effort on a one-man rush up the ice. The star forward maneuvered between two Canadiens defensemen and fired the puck past Jake Allen for McDavid's 24th goal of the season.
The Oilers scored four unanswered goals against the Habs, all during the final 10 minutes of a dominant third period.
Jesse Puljujarvi had a goal and an assist for Edmonton. Ethan Bear and Devin Shore had the Oilers' other goals.
Edmonton is 13-4-2 over its past 19 games, a stretch that includes an 8-0-0 record on home ice.
Mike Smith stopped 22 of 23 shots for his 16th win of the season.
Eric Staal scored Montreal's lone goal.
The Canadiens dropped to 2-6-0 over their past eight games, and the team was dealt another blow with a potential injury to goaltender Carey Price.
After stopping all seven shots faced in the first period, Price was replaced by Jake Allen after the first intermission. No official reason was given for Price's removal, though he was playing his second game since a six-game absence due to a lower-body injury.
Allen stopped 25 of 28 shots over the final two periods in relief of Price.
The Oilers also went down a player after forward Jujhar Khaira (upper-body injury) didn't return after a first-period bodycheck from Alexander Romanov.
McDavid had only two assists in Edmonton's previous five games against Montreal this season, and the NHL points leader initially seemed snake-bitten once more against the Habs on Monday.
McDavid had a first-period goal reversed on video review due to goalie interference, and he fumbled a Puljujarvi pass on a two-on-none breakaway chance in the second period.
The two teams will play again in Edmonton on Wednesday.
