The Coyotes took the early lead when Chychrun sent a shot through traffic and to the far post at 1:25 of the first period. It was his ninth of the season.
Just 3:27 later, Goligoski made it 2-0 when his one-timer from the slot beat Johansson for his first goal of the season.
Colorado came back later in the period on a power play, getting within a goal when Landeskog battled in front of the net, kicked a loose puck to his stick and knocked it in at 14:47. It was his 10th of the season.
The Avalanche tied it when Rantanen's shot from the right circle beat Hill to the far side at 18:49 of the first. It was Rantanen's 19th of the season.
MacKinnon put Colorado ahead with his 10th goal of the season and 200th of his career at 19:49 of the second period.
Nichushkin put the Avalanche ahead by 4-2 when he tipped Ryan Graves' shot from the point at 5:28 of the third. It was his seventh of the season.
The Coyotes got back in it with two goals in a span of 2:03. Crouse made it 4-3 when he scored on a rebound at 6:38, his second of the season, and Kessel had his sharp-angle shot sneak through for his 10th at 8:41.
