Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Calvert scored 11 seconds apart to open Colorado's five-goal third period, and the Avalanche beat the Winnipeg Jets 7-1 on Wednesday night in Denver.

Carl Soderberg and Tyson Jost each had a goal and two assists for Colorado, Gabriel Landeskog added a goal and an assist, and Mikko Rantanen and A.J. Greer also scored. Semyon Varlamov had 26 saves for the Avalanche, who have won three of their last four and moved into the second wild card spot in the Western Conference.

They are tied with Chicago with 61 points but have played one game fewer than the Blackhawks.

Greer scored his first NHL goal for Colorado, which had seven forwards score in the game.

Colorado has won consecutive games for the first time since winning six in a row in November.

Kyle Connor had a goal and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 39 shots for Winnipeg. The Jets have lost six of their past eight (2-4-2).

The Avalanche had a few chances to get a goal in the first period, the best when Jost nearly knocked in a rebound that sat in front of Winnipeg's open net in the final minute.

Jets center Bryan Little drew a minor penalty on the play, and eight seconds after the Jets killed off the penalty, defenseman Tyler Myers was given a roughing minor. Winnipeg killed that one, as well, but Soderberg scored at 3:39 of the second, four seconds after Myers got out of the box.

It was his 19th goal of the season.

Later in the period, Matt Nieto fed Rantanen in front, and Rantanen buried it for his 25th goal of the season at 11:21.

Colorado blew it open in the third. MacKinnon scored on the power play 59 seconds in to make it 3-0, and Calvert scored off the ensuing faceoff when he knocked in his own rebound at 1:10 to make it 4-0.

MacKinnon's goal, his 30th, was the Avalanche's first on the power play in their past 30 chances.

Connor ended Varlamov's shutout bid when he scored 47 seconds after Calvert. It was Winnipeg's first power-play goal in its past 22 chances.

Jost made it 5-1 with his eighth goal at 5:12 and then assisted on Landeskog's team-leading 31st goal at 17:41.

Greer scored with 34 seconds left.
