Oilers 4, Avalanche 3: Derek Roy snapped a tie midway through the third period with a power-play goal as host Edmonton damaged Colorado’s slim playoff chances.

Defenseman Martin Marincin recorded his first career goal and Taylor Hall tallied for the first time since returning from a knee injury while Jordan Eberle also scored for the Oilers, who have earned points in five of their last six games (3-1-2). Ben Scrivens made 41 saves while Andrew Miller, Anton Lander and Benoit Pouliot notched two assists apiece as Edmonton scored the first three goals of the contest before allowing the Avalanche to pull even.

Ryan O’Reilly extended his point streak with a goal and two assists, Alex Tanguay registered one of each and Jarome Iginla scored on a power play for Colorado, which needed a win to keep pace in the race for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Semyon Varlamov allowed three goals on seven shots and Reto Berra was saddled with the hard-luck loss despite making 26 saves in relief as the Avalanche remained 10 points behind Winnipeg with nine games remaining.

Marincin pinched in from the point and snapped a shot from the right faceoff circle past Varlamov 4:33 into the contest. Eberle knocked in a loose puck at the side of the net 80 seconds later and Hall fired a shot between Varlamov’s pads at 9:36 of the first period to end the netminder’s night.

Iginla blasted a shot from the high slot past a screened Scrivens 5:22 into the second and Tanguay batted home a rebound 5:09 later to bring the Avalanche within a goal. Tanguay stripped Edmonton defenseman Justin Schultz of the puck in a dangerous area to set up a tap-in by O’Reilly at 4:54 of the third to tie it, but Roy shoveled home a rebound with 9:18 remaining to put the Oilers ahead for good.
