Sabres 3, Lightning 1: Jhonas Enroth turned aside 43 shots as visiting Buffalo defeated Tampa Bay to spoil the return of All-Star Steven Stamkos.
Defenseman Tyler Myers, Marcus Foligno and Cody Hodgson each recorded a goal and an assist for the Sabres, who won for the fourth time in five games. Enroth made 31 of his saves in the first two periods to improve to 4-13-5 - with three victories in his last four decisions.
Tyler Johnson scored a short-handed goal with 2:29 left to pull the Lightning within two and Anders Lindback made 18 saves in his first appearance since Jan. 30. Stamkos, who missed the last 45 games with the broken right tibia, had five shots on goal, two hits and was 17-7 in the faceoff circle.
Enroth stopped all 15 shots he faced in the opening period and Myers intercepted a long cross-ice pass by defenseman Mark Barberio before moving in to score from the right circle at 15:56. Buffalo doubled the lead 9:25 into the second session as Foligno knocked in a loose puck at the left post after a scramble around the net.
Stamkos had a golden chance to cut the lead in half late in the second, but his shot from the low slot went just wide right as Enroth was moving the other way. Buffalo made it 3-0 with 6:16 left in the third when Foligno dove to tip the puck to Hodgson, who snuck a shot between Lindback’s pads.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Stamkos was named the 10th captain of the Lightning before the game, replacing Martin St. Louis after the latter was traded to the New York Rangers on Wednesday. … Buffalos Cs Zenon Konopka and RW Cory Conacher, both former Tampa Bay players, were scratched. …Lightning D Radko Gudas missed his second straight game with a lower-body injury.
