Avalanche 3, Flames 2: Maxime Talbot recorded a goal and an assist in a 54-second span late in the second period and Jean-Sebastien Giguere remained unbeaten this season as visiting Colorado edged Calgary.

Rookie Nathan MacKinnon scored his third goal in four games, PA Parenteau also tallied and John Mitchell recorded two assists for the Avalanche. Giguere made 26 saves to improve to 7-0-0 on the season as Colorado rebounded from an embarrassing 8-2 loss at Edmonton on Thursday.

Defenseman Kris Russell registered a power-play goal and Matt Stajan scored with 1:55 left in the third period to bring Calgary within 3-2. Karri Ramo, who yielded a total of two goals in the previous two contests, turned aside 22 shots.

Calgary held an 11-5 edge in shots during the opening 20 minutes and took the lead at 7:01 on Russell’s shot from the high slot through a screen. Giguere thought he was interfered with on the play and showed his displeasure by pushing the net off its pegs, which earned him an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Talbot scored his first goal with the Avalanche with two minutes left in the middle session after Mitchell intercepted a clearing attempt by Ramo in the left corner. Talbot fed Parenteau in front 54 seconds later to give Colorado a 2-1 lead and MacKinnon knocked home a rebound 2:28 into the third.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Colorado D Jan Hejda, who shared the team lead with a plus-17 rating coming in, missed the game due to a knee injury he sustained Thursday at Edmonton. … Calgary LW Lane MacDermid, acquired from Dallas on Nov. 22, made his Flames debut and collected seven penalty minutes in 4:08 of ice time. … Colorado won for the first time in seven games when trailing after one period and improved to 17-0-0 when leading after two sessions.
