Rangers 4, Hurricanes 3 (OT): Captain Ryan Callahan scored 2:55 into overtime as visiting New York clinched a playoff berth for the third consecutive season.

Derek Stepan matched Callahan with a goal and an assist, Derick Brassard scored for the fourth time in five games and Brad Richards also tallied. Henrik Lundqvist made 18 saves for the Rangers, who are even in points with Ottawa and the New York Islander but occupy seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

In overtime, Stepan wristed the puck into the offensive zone and Callahan chased it down before wiring a sharp-angle shot past Dan Ellis (34 saves).

Richards forged a 3-3 tie with 2:57 remaining in the third period as his blast from the point caromed off the end boards and deflected into the net off the right skate of Ellis.

After scoring in the second period to extend his point streak to seven games, Jiri Tlusty snapped a 2-2 tie by converting a 2-on-1 rush with captain Eric Staal for his 23rd goal - and fourth in three contests.

GAME NOTEBOOK: RW Jared Staal joined brothers Eric and Jordan on the ice for Carolina. The youngest Staal, who was recalled from Charlotte of the American Hockey League on Wednesday, had one shot on goal in 12:16 of ice time. Parents Henry and Linda Staal were in attendance. ... Callahan extended his point streak to six contests. Richards increased his point streak to five while LW Taylor Pyatt saw his four-game point streak come to an end. ... Carolina D Jay Harrison was hit in the face by a wrist shot from Callahan and dropped to the ice. Harrison was bleeding profusely as he made a quick exit to the locker room. He did not return.
