Austin Czarnik and Johnny Gaudreau scored third-period goals 29 seconds apart to break open a tie game, and the host Calgary Flames claimed a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night for their third consecutive win.

With the score tied 2-2, Czarnik netted the game-winning goal at 6:10 of the third. The fortuitous tally went off a defender and into the net to give Czarnik goals in three straight games.

On a power play right after, Gaudreau wired a slap shot from the left faceoff dot for his first goal in 10 games and 30th of the season, which matches his career high.

Mike Smith made 17 saves for the Western Conference-leading Flames, who blew a 2-0 lead before recovering.

Calgary's Mikael Backlund opened the scoring exactly five minutes into the affair. Michael Frolik led an odd-man rush down the ice, fed the puck to Backlund at the doorstep, and Backlund made a nifty move to deposit it into the net for his 15th goal of the season.

Travis Hamonic doubled the Calgary lead with four minutes left in the first period. Hamonic, whom the Flames acquired from the Islanders via trade a couple of summers ago, got the puck off a won faceoff and found the mark with a long point shot to collect his fifth goal of the season.

With his assist on the goal, Elias Lindholm now has a six-game point streak in which he has collected two goals and seven assists.

But the Islanders, despite being drastically outplayed, showed why they are atop the Metropolitan Division. Casey Cizikas put the visitors on the board just past the midway point, with just his team's sixth shot on goal, for his 16th goal of the season.

Then Anders Lee scored 78 seconds into the third period to tie the game 2-2. Lee was shockingly left alone in the slot when he was passed the puck, and he buried his 20th goal of the season.

Thomas Greiss stopped 28 shots for the Islanders, who saw their two-game winning streak end.
