Wells' basket capped a dramatic comeback by Maryland (18-3, 6-2), which trailed by 11 points with 3 1/2 minutes to go. Freshman Melo Trimble scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as the Terrapins pulled out the win despite shooting just 40.7 percent and being outrebounded 32-27.

Freshman Bryant McIntosh scored 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting and Sanjay Lumpkin added 12 for Northwestern (10-10, 1-6), which lost its sixth straight game. Tre Demps added nine points for the Wildcats, who turned over the ball 17 times as Maryland finished with a 19-10 advantage in points off turnovers.

After Trimble put Maryland ahead 66-65 with a pair of free throws with 20.6 seconds remaining, Demps hit a short jumper from the left of key to put Northwestern back in front with 9.3 seconds left. The Terrapins immediately inbounded the ball and Trimble fired up a jumper that missed, but a slashing Wells tapped in the rebound for the game-winner as Northwestern failed to get off a shot before the final buzzer.
