Virginia Tech (8-11, 0-6) gave its in-state rival all that it could handle before suffering its sixth straight loss when Adam Smith's 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.

Darion Atkins added nine points for the Cavaliers, who overcame 34.7 percent shooting by hitting 10-of-12 foul shots, although Atkins missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 13 seconds left to give Virginia Tech one last chance.

Virginia scored nine of the game's first 11 points and led by three at halftime before Malcolm Brogdon nailed a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the second half to create a 33-27 advantage. Virginia Tech scored the next 16 points, starting with a jumper and a 3-pointer by Malik Muller before Smith scored seven points to help the hosts extend their lead to 43-33 with just over 10 1/2 minutes left.

However, the Hokies only scored two points over the next 9 1/2 minutes, while Perrantes made a 3-pointer to ignite the decisive run before Anderson later threw down an alley-oop and a drained a 3-pointer on back-to-back trips to give the Cavaliers the lead for good. Virginia Tech's Ahmed Hill was fouled while making a layup but missed the foul shot with 1:09 left and Muller's 3-pointer was blocked by Anderson with about 20 seconds remaining.
