Sophomore Cameron Tyson scored a career-high 31 points off the bench as No. 6 Houston rolled to its seventh consecutive victory, routing host Tulane 83-60 Thursday night in New Orleans.
The Cougars (14-1, 9-1 American Athletic Conference) made 13 of 32 3-point attempts. The Green Wave (6-5, 1-5) missed all 13 of their long-range shots before halftime and finished 4 of 23 from beyond the arc.
Tramon Mark added 16 points and Justin Gorham grabbed 15 rebounds for Houston, which defeated the visiting Green Wave 71-50 on Jan. 9.
The Cougars never trailed despite playing without leading scorer Quentin Grimes, who hurt an ankle in practice. They clearly didn't miss him against an outmanned opponent.
Jordan Walker scored 16, Gabe Watson added 13, Tylan Pope had 12 and Jaylen Forbes contributed 11 for Tulane, which was playing its first game since a 66-57 home loss to Temple 12 days earlier. The return to the court coincided with Green Wave coach Ron Hunter returning to the bench after a one-game absence due to a bout with COVID-19.
Houston led by 30 points at halftime, but Tulane matched its four field goals made in the first half during the first 3:12 of the second half.
The improvement mattered little as the lead remained above 20 points the rest of the way.
The Cougars ran out to a 20-5 lead behind their 3-point shooting. Mark, Gorham and Marcus Sasser each made a 3-pointer during the hot start.
Watson's layup was the Green Wave's second field goal in 14 attempts, and it stopped Houston's 13-0 run.
Tyson made three 3-pointers and assisted on DeJon Jarreau's 3-pointer as the Cougars extended the lead to 36-8.
Tulane missed 26 of its first 28 shots after missing 19 of its first 20 shots in the second half of the loss to Temple.
Forbes' layup ended the Green Wave's field-goal drought after 8:11.
Watson scored four points but Tyson made two more 3-pointers as Houston took a 44-14 halftime lead.
The Cougars made 16 of 34 field-goal attempts in the first half while Tulane was 4 of 32.
