Sophomore shooting guard Issa Thiam posted a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds to pace Rutgers to a 94-38 victory over CCNY on Friday night in Piscataway, N.J.
Senior forward Deshawn Freeman (16 points) hit all seven of his shots from the field for the Scarlet Knights (1-0), who shot 61 percent from the field in the first of seven consecutive games at Rutgers Athletic Center. Junior guard Corey Sanders added 12 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Freshman guard Samuel Williams led undersized Division III CCNY (0-1) with nine points in head coach Paul Dail's debut. The Beavers lost their four double-figure scorers as well as their coach from last year's 17-win team, which marked the program's best showing since the 1949-50 squad became the only team to win the NCAA and NIT titles in the same season.
Rutgers raced out to a 9-0 lead in the opening three minutes as guard Geo Baker -- one of two freshmen in the starting lineup -- scored the season's first basket and handed out two assists. Baker finished with 10 points and four assists.
Freeman had five rebounds and three steals to guide Rutgers to a 51-13 halftime lead. Though the Scarlet Knights hit just 1 of 11 from 3-point range before the break, they canned 19 of 24 shots inside the arc.
CCNY shot 18 percent in the first half and finished at 21 percent.
Thiam needed just 26 minutes to deliver his first career double-double as he left the game for good with 12:32 to play and Rutgers leading 68-25. Twelve of the 13 Scarlet Knights to see the court produced at least one basket.
