Colorado won the game, but Rob Davis of Fort Hays State stole the show.

The Buffaloes held the Tigers to one field goal over the game's first eight minutes and built a big lead that they needed every point of in their 81-71 win over Fort Hays State on Saturday in Boulder, Colo.

Davis, who came in leading Division II in points scored, made 7 of 8 3-pointers in the second half and led all scorers with 29 points. In foul trouble and held scoreless in the first 20 minutes, Davis was 11-for-16 from the field in the second half. His 29 points in a half set a record at the Coors Event Center.

Xavier Johnson, Josh Fortune and Deleon Brown each scored 15 points to lead the Buffaloes (8-3). It was a career high for Brown. Due to Division II rules, the game was an exhibition for Fort Hays State (7-4).

After Colorado extended its lead to 21 early in the second half, Fort Hayes State, behind 11 points from Davis, went on a 17-4 run to cut the deficit to 47-39. The Buffaloes answered with a 12-2 run of their own, but could never really shake Davis and the Tigers.

During the game's first eight minutes, Fort Hays State missed 14 of 15 shots and committed eight fouls as the Buffaloes raced to an 18-3 lead.

Davis, who entered the game shooting 57 percent from the field and 32-for-57 from 3-point range, missed his first four shots and picked up his third foul with just over nine minutes to go in the first half.

After Colorado's early run, Fort Hays State got within 10 on a jumper by Brady Werth, but the Buffaloes outscored the Tigers 14-7 the rest of the way and led 39-22 at the break.

Colorado continued to struggle from 3-point range in the first half, making 2 of 11 attempts, but shot 67 percent from inside the arc. Colorado shot less than 30 percent on 3-point attempts for the second straight game.

The game was the first of three in five days for Colorado. The Buffaloes play at Air Force on Monday and host Eastern Washington on Thursday.
