WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Known as No. 15 Purdue's go-to players, power forward Caleb Swanigan and 7-2 center Isaac Haas had four total points at halftime of Wednesday night's Big Ten opener against Iowa in Mackey Arena.

A team knows it is its night when that happens and it still leads by 24 through 20 minutes.

Starting guards Carsen Edwards (19) and Dakota Mathias (17) combined for 36 points and Purdue cruised to an 89-67 Big Ten opening victory over Iowa in Mackey Arena.

"They were really keying on Isaac and Caleb down low in the first half, so we got some open looks outside," Mathias said. "In the second half, they started keying on the outside, so we came open for some shots in the low post. It was a good mix for us all."

The Boilermakers (12-2, 1-0), who won their seventh in a row, also got 16 points from Haas, 15 from Vince Edwards -- no relation to Carsen Edwards -- and 11 points and 10 rebounds from Big Ten Player of the Week Swanigan, who posted his fifth consecutive double-double.

Iowa's Peter Jok, who entered as the Big Ten's scoring leader at 22.6 points per game, was held to 13 on 4-of-15 shooting from the field, including 1 of 7 from 3-point range. Mathias guarded Jok most of the night.

"He is tough to guard because he always is moving," Mathias said. "It was a tough challenge, but I think we did a good job with him tonight."

The Hawkeyes fall to 8-6, 0-1, having a five-game winning streak snapped.

It was Purdue coach Matt Painter's 250th victory in his 12th season at his alma mater

"Dakota has done a great job of getting prepared to defend good players," Painter said. "We got off to a good start, moved the ball well and made shots. I think our shooting in the first half opened things up for Isaac in the second half."

For Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, it was a night coaches with young teams fear.

"We didn't play with the necessary poise to play a ranked team like that," McCaffery said. "We can't survive being down 15 or 16. We can't survive being down 25, and it was 25 pretty quickly. We felt like we wanted to limit their low-post opportunities, but they did a really good job of moving the ball and finding the open guy."

Carsen Edwards scored the game's first eight points, and Mathias took over at that point, scoring 16 first-half points as the Boilermakers raced to a 49-25 lead through 20 minutes.

Iowa limited Swanigan and Haas to two first-half points each, but Purdue's guards took complete advantage of wide-open looks from the perimeter. The Boilermakers made a collective 10 of 17 shots from 3-point range (58.8 percent) before intermission.

Carsen Edwards, who had 10 in the first half, Mathias and Ryan Cline were a combined 8 of 11 from beyond the arc during the first 20 minutes.

Nicholas Baer's seven first-half points led Iowa, which got only two from Jok and made only 10 of 32 shots from the field (31.3 percent), including 0 of 7 from 3-point range.
