Markus Howard scored 23 points and Jajuan Johnson added 20 to lead Marquette to a 76-66 Big East victory over Georgetown in a conference opener for both teams on Wednesday at Milwaukee's BMO Harris Bradley Center.
The Golden Eagles (10-3, 1-0) won their third straight and eighth in nine games as Andrew Rowsey scored 11 points and Luke Fischer pulled down 10 rebounds.
Rodney Pryor scored 23 points as the Hoyas (8-5, 0-1) saw a six-game winning streak end. Jessie Govan and Marcus Derrickson each added 11 points.
The Golden Eagles opened with 11 unanswered points -- including a pair of Howard 3-pointers -- before Hoyas forward Jonathan Mulmore's jumper at the 15:42 broke the shutout.
Georgetown then made up for lost time and closed the gap, cutting the lead to 38-35 with 44 seconds left in the half. However, Johnson's jumper and two Sam Hauser free throws in the final 21 seconds gave Marquette a 42-35 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a 10-4 run for a 52-39 lead at the 13:47 mark. Georgetown twice closed within eight points in the final 3:08 but got no closer.
Marquette shot 26 of 59 (44.1 percent) and hit 10 of 23 from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles came into the game third nationally in field-goal shooting (49.8 percent). Georgetown was 25 of 59 (42.4 percent), had nine 3-pointers on 21 attempts and outrebounded the hosts 37-31.
Georgetown resumes Big East play at home on Saturday against Xavier while Marquette travels to Seton Hall on Sunday.
