Haanif Cheatham scored 19 points to lead Marquette to a 89-56 victory over Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville on Wednesday night at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.
Cheatham hit 8 of 10 shots from the field to pace a Golden Eagles offense that shot 53.3 percent from the floor and knocked down 6 of 16 3-pointers.
He was one of five players to score in double figures for Marquette. Luke Fischer added 15 points and Jajuan Jonson had 14. Sam Hauser and Duane Wilson finished with 11 each.
Jalen Henry led Southern Illinois-Edwasrdsville with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, including the Cougars' only 3-pointer in nine attempts. Keenan Simmons chipped in 12 points and Carlos Anderson finished with eight after going 4 of 14 from the floor and 0 of 3 from beyond the arc.
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville stayed close for much of the first half, but Marquette finally pulled away with a 10-0 run, capped by a Cheatham steal and layup to make it a 30-20 with 5:46 left. Cheatham scored 11 in the half as the Golden Eagles made 18 of 30 shots and took a 45-27 lead into the break.
The Cougars shot 45.8 percent from the field in the half but were plagued by 12 turnovers that Marquette turned into 16 points.
Marquette committed eight turnovers in the first half but only three in the final 20 minutes and led by as many as 35.
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville's shooting touch all but disappeared after halftime. The Cougars made just 9 of 26 shots from the field and were 0 of 4 from long distance with 10 more turnovers.
The Golden Eagles (8-3) return to action next Wednesday to face Georgetown in their Big East Conference opener.
The Cougars (4-9) have one more nonconference game -- next Wednesday against Missouri S&T -- before kicking off Ohio Valley Conference play on New Year's Eve.
