Curtis Cobb and Tyler Nelson led five players in double figures with 20 points apiece and Fairfield held off a late rally by Boston College to post an 89-83 victory over the Eagles in the opener of a Birthday of Basketball double-header at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
The win, which ended a three-game losing streak, raised the Stags' record to 6-4 and sent BC to 6-6 -- in the first meeting between the schools since 2006.
The Stags, who had a 15-point first-half lead, led by nine before BC's late charge, fueled by a trapping defense, cut the deficit to two points with 1:56 left. But Amidou Sadibe scored four straight points for his team as Fairfield took an 87-83 lead with 32.5 seconds remaining.
Jerry Johnson added 17 points, Sidibe had 12, and nine rebounds, and Jonathan Kasibabu added 10 points and eight boards in the win, which came despite a career-high 33 points by BC freshman Ky Bowman; and triggered an on-court celebration by the Stags for the victory over an ACC opponent.
Bowman was 13-for-21 from the floor and added eight rebounds and five assists. Jerome Robinson, the reigning ACC co-player of the week, had 21 points but had four of BC's 16 turnovers and also missed a crucial reverse layup late. He was also just 1-for-6 from the foul line, his team going 15-for-28 from the stripe in the game.
Fairfield went 11-for-28 from 3-point range while the Eagles were just 4-for-11 from behind the arc. BC had a 40-33 rebound edge.
Auburn and Oklahoma met in the second game of the twin bill, sponsored by the Basketball Hall of Fame on the 125th anniversary of the day Dr. James Naismith introduced the game in Springfield, Mass.
