With the help of a late run and career-best 25 points from Shamorie Ponds, St. John's pulled away from Cal State Northridge for a 76-70 win on Monday night at Carnesecca Arena in New York.

The Red Storm (4-5) used a 7-0 run with less than seven minutes left to take the lead for good. It was the second straight win for St. John's and marked the first time since its first two games of the season the team had back-to-back wins.

Ponds, a freshman guard, set a career scoring high, making 10 of 18 shots from the floor and knocking down 3 of 7 3-point attempts.

Ponds added five assists and three rebounds and was the only St. John's player to hit more than four shots from the floor. He also made two free throws inside of 20 seconds which doubled the St. John’s lead to 74-70.

St. John's leading scorer Marcus LoVett missed the game with an apparent ankle injury. LoVett is averaging 18.8 points this season.

LoVett's scoring void was filled in part by junior wing Bashir Ahmed, who had 13 points and added eight rebounds. Sophomore Federico Mussini added 12 points, hitting his first four 3-pointers of the game.

St. John's shot 43.9 percent from the floor and 47.6 (10 of 21) percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Red Storm tied a school record by hitting 16 3-pointers in their last game against Tulane. In their last two games, the Red Storm are 26 of 46 (56.5 percent) on 3-pointers.

St. John's is now 2-0 in December after finishing November on a five-game losing streak that included a loss to Delaware State -- a team with no other wins against a Division I opponent this season.

Cal Sstate Northridge (3-6) had four players score in double figures, led by junior guard Darin Johnson's 16 points -- seven of which came from the foul line.
