After trailing against visiting Cal State Northridge in the first half with only two 3-pointers, No. 16 UCLA attacked the basket and corralled rebounds aggressively to pull away to a 102-87 victory Sunday night.

The Bruins (2-0) went 5 of 16 from beyond the arc after making a school-record 18 in a 119-80 win over Pacific on Friday. They made up for that disparity against Northridge by taking high-percentage shots and outrebounding the Matadors 23-11 in the second half.

"In the first half, we came out slow," said UCLA center Gyorgy Goloman, who had 12 points and eight rebounds. "In the locker room at halftime, we just talked as a team. Coach (Steve) Alford talked to us. We just had to pick up the tempo and start playing tough."

UCLA senior guard Bryce Alford scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half and was pivotal in one stretch that turned a close game into a comfortable lead. The game, led by Northridge 42-40 at halftime, featured 14 lead changes and was tied 11 times.

The Bruins overcame 20 turnovers by shooting 58.8 percent from the field in the second half after making only 39.4 percent in the first half.

"The early season is all about experiences," Steve Alford said. "We have young guys mixed with veterans. Give CSUN a lot of credit. They weren't intimidated at all by playing here.

"I told the guys you got to keep having these learning lessons to get better. The season's long. You can't prepare differently for each game. It's a mindset. It's a habit. We had too many turnovers and breakdowns. Those are habits that must be fixed."

UCLA had seven players score in double figures, led by guard Isaac Hamilton, who had 12 of his 22 points in the second half. Lonzo Ball and Aaron Holiday each contributed 13. Ball, a true freshman, also had eight rebounds and six assists.

TJ Leaf and Goloman scored 12 apiece, and Thomas Welsh finished with 10 points and 13 boards.

The Bruins scored 31 points from the free-throw line in 39 attempts, while Northridge was 16 of 24 on foul shots. UCLA outrebounded the Matadors 44-31.

"We had our chances, but we just made too many turnovers and gave them too many chances off those turnovers and their rebounds," Northridge coach Reggie Theus said. "The good thing is we know we can fix those problems. We'll learn from this and move on."

Northridge (1-1) got a team-high 21 points from guard Kendall Smith and 18 from guard Tavrion Dawson. Guard Darin Johnson scored 15. Connecticut transfer Rakim Lubin, who fouled out with 6:39 left, added eight points and 13 rebounds.

UCLA went on a game-turning 16-4 run -- nine of the points scored by Bryce Alford -- to take a 67-57 lead with 12:01 left in the second half. The Matadors shot 2 of 8 from the field in that stretch and committed two of their 18 turnovers. They did not come closer than nine points after that.

UCLA, which was 2 of 10 from 3-point range before halftime, missed its last 10 shots from the field over the final 4:42 of the half as Northridge took a 42-40 lead into halftime.

NOTES: Touted recruit Kris Wilkes, a small forward from Indianapolis North Central High School, signed with UCLA on Sunday. He reportedly chose the Bruins over Indiana and Illinois. ... Northridge has eight transfers from Division I programs, including Connecticut, Washington, UNLV and Texas A&M. ... Northridge coach Reggie Theus and UCLA coach Steve Alford are former college basketball standouts (Theus at UNLV and Alford at Indiana). They also coach their sons (Reggie Theus Jr. and Bryce Alford).
