Heralded freshman Ted Kapita scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead North Carolina State to an 86-61 win over St. Francis (NY) on Sunday at Raleigh, N.C.
Kapita, who is from the Democratic Republic of Congo and was enrolled at Arkansas last year, missed the Wolfpack's season opener on Friday while his eligibility issue was being cleared.
In that season opener, the Wolfpack (2-0) hung on to beat Georgia Southern 81-79 despite giving up 20 offensive boards.
With Kapita in the lineup, the Terriers didn't stand a chance. He went 7-for-8 from the field and added an assist and a steal to spark the Wolfpack.
But he had plenty of help this day.
Sophomore Torin Dorn, who recorded a double-double on Friday, led the Wolfpack with 21 points. Terry Henderson, coming off a 23-point performance against Georgia Southern, chipped in 11 points and five boards for NC State.
Glenn Sanabria scored 14 points to pace the Terriers (0-1), who were held in the first half to 10 of 28 from the field (37 percent). For the game, the Terriers made only 21 of 62 field-goal attempts (33.5 percent).
North Carolina State made 14 of 25 field-goal attempts to open a 42-31 halftime lead. The Wolfpack kept the Terriers at arms' reach throughout much of the second half, maintaining leads from 12 to 18 points.
Dennis Smith Jr.'s free throw at the 6:58 mark put the Wolfpack up 70-52. Kapita followed with a layup to push the lead to 20.
Dorn completed the rout with a layup in the closing seconds for NC State's largest lead of the day.
Kapita's debut couldn't have gone any better for the North Carolina State. The 6-foot, 8-inch forward is expected to hold down the fort until 7-foot center Omer Yurtseven returns from a nine-game suspension for playing with a Turkish pro club.
