Devin Robinson scored 14 points, and Florida used a big second-half surge to put away short-handed Florida Gulf Coast 80-59 on Friday in the season opener for both teams at Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.

After a tight first half, Florida Gulf Coast grabbed the lead early in the second. A layup by Zach Johnson put the Eagles in front 50-45 with 16 minutes to play, but Florida Gulf Coast went cold and didn't score for the next seven minutes.

Florida took advantage, running off 15 straight points to regain control. The Gators also closed the game with a 20-9 run.

Florida junior center John Egbunu finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, and senior guard Canyon Barry came off the bench to add 13 points for the Gators.

Junior guard Brandon Goodwin led Florida Gulf Coast with 14 points, and sophomore guard Rayjon Turner came off the bench to add 10 points for the Eagles.

Florida Gulf Coast senior forward Marc-Eddy Norelia, an all-conference performer and NBA prospect, did not play. He broke his left shooting hand in early October.

The Gators capitalized on 19 Eagles' turnovers and outscored Florida Gulf Coast 20-5 from the foul line.

Florida is unranked, but was picked to finish second in the SEC behind Kentucky.

Sophomore guard KeVaughn Allen, a preseason second-team All-SEC pick, was held to six points.
