Jae'Sean Tate scored 21 points and Ohio State opened its season on Sunday with a 76-54 victory over Mount St. Mary's at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
The win was coach Thad Matta's 300th at Ohio State and his 402nd overall.
Tate, a sophomore forward, made 8 of 12 shots from the field, including both of his 3-points shots, and had nine rebounds and three assists.
Junior forward Marc Loving, one of a handful of returning Ohio State players with experience, finished with 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Keita Bates-Diop had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Heralded freshman guard JaQuan Lyle made his Buckeyes debut with 12 points and six rebounds but had five turnovers. Freshman forward-center Daniel Giddens added 11 points and six rebounds in his first game.
Ohio State (1-0), which lost 65 percent of its scoring and 61 percent of its rebounding from last season, essentially put the game away with a 17-0 run in the first half that boosted its lead to 37-13. Tate scored 14 points and Lyle had 11 to lead the Buckeyes to a 42-21 advantage at halftime.
Mount St. Mary's never led but pulled as close as 64-51 with 5:19 left before Ohio State secured the win.
The young Buckeyes shot 50 percent from the field (28 of 56) and 82.4 percent from the free throw line (14 of 17). They dominated the glass with a 47-21 rebounding advantage but had 17 turnovers.
Junior Robinson, a 5-foot-5 point guard, led Mount St. Mary's (0-2) with 16 points. The Mountaineers opened with a loss at No. 3 Maryland on Friday night and continue their challenging schedule with Washington and No. 9 Gonzaga this week.
