86, Coastal Carolina 72: Frank Kaminsky had 27 points and 12 rebounds
as the top-seeded Badgers cruised to a win over the 16th-seeded
Chanticleers in the NCAA Tournament in Omaha, Neb.
Sam
Dekker added 20 points while Nigel Hayes had 15 points and eight
rebounds for Wisconsin (32-3), which advanced to a matchup with
Oregon on Sunday. The Badgers shot 54.1 percent from the field and
outrebounded the Chanticleers 36-25.
Warren
Gillis scored 22 points for Coastal Carolina (24-10) while Elijah
Wilson added 20 points off the bench. Wilson hit 4-of-4 from 3-point
range to lead the Chanticleers' 7-for-12 shooting effort from
beyond the arc.
The
Chanticleers hung tough in the first half, trailing by four with
less than seven minutes to play, but Wisconsin struck for an 11-3 run
to open up a 12-point lead, and Kaminsky's 3-pointer in the closing
seconds pushed the lead to 15 at halftime. The Badgers shot 54.8
percent from the field in the first 20 minutes while Coastal Carolina
shot 52 percent, but Hayes had eight boards - seven off the offensive glass - to help Wisconsin get ahead.
Coastal
Carolina tried to fight back in the second half, but Wisconsin had too much and pushed its advantage to 20 on Bronson Koenig's
3-pointer with less than 10 minutes to go. It was down to 16 with five
minutes left but Kaminsky had a pair of three-point plays around Duje Dukan's dunk to up the lead to 24 with less than four minutes left.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Badgers have
won 17 of their last 18 contests. … Coastal Carolina is 0-4 in
four NCAA Tournament appearances. … Wisconsin set a school record for victories in a season.
