No. 10 Kansas 64, TCU 59: Kelly Oubre Jr. scored a career-best 25 points and also contributed six rebounds and three steals as the top-seeded Jayhawks held off the Horned Frogs to advance to the Big 12 tournament semifinals in Kansas City.
Landen Lucas had 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for Kansas (25-7), which was without leading scorer Perry Ellis (knee) and next faces Baylor on Friday. Oubre was 15-of-19 from the free-throw line and Jamari Traylor had three blocks as the Jayhawks had nine rejections overall.
Trey Zeigler had 20 points for ninth-seeded TCU (18-15), which defeated Kansas State in the opening round before playing the Jayhawks tight. Chris Washburn scored 10 and Karviar Shepherd and Kenrich Williams added eight points apiece with Williams making the lone 3-pointer of the game for either squad.
Oubre scored 10 straight Kansas points – eight from the free-throw line – to help the Jayhawks gain a 57-53 lead with 4:48 remaining. The Horned Frogs were within two after Washburn’s basket before Oubre drove in a for a monster slam to make it 61-57 with 1:09 to play and Lucas followed by scoring on a lob with 28.3 seconds left to all but seal it.
Kansas shot 53.8 percent from the field in the first half but couldn’t shake the Horned Frogs while taking a 33-26 lead into the break. TCU opened the second half with six straight points and finally caught the Jayhawks at 47 on the 3-pointer by Williams with 8:31 remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The 20-point outing is the third of the season for Oubre. … TCU leading scorer Kyan Anderson had just three points before fouling out. … Jayhawks F Cliff Alexander again sat out while the NCAA investigates whether or not he received impermissible benefits from an agent.
