Villanova 84, Marquette 49: Josh Hart buried five 3-pointers en route to 20 points off the bench as the Wildcats crushed the Golden Eagles in the Big East tournament in New York.
Darrun Hilliard II collected 13 points and eight assists and Dylan Ennis scored 12 for No. 1 seed Villanova (30-2), which has won 13 straight and will take on Providence in Friday's semifinals. The Wildcats matched a Big East tournament and school record with 17 made 3-pointers, going 17-of-29 from beyond the arc.
Derrick Wilson recorded 11 points, nine assists and six rebounds to lead No. 9 seed Marquette (13-19). Luke Fischer scored 10 points for the Golden Eagles, who shot 39.1 percent from the floor and missed 10 free throws while turning the ball over 22 times.
Villanova opened with a 13-2 run and got three 3-pointers from Hart and two more from Ennis in a 17-0 burst later in the first half that pushed the lead to 35-16. Hart’s fourth 3-pointer of the half made it a 39-21 gap at the break as the Wildcats cruised into the locker room after going 10-of-16 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.
Hilliard scored to make it 50-27 with 14 1/2 minutes left before back-to-back 3-pointers began a brief run for Marquette, which closed within 56-40 just past the midway point of the period. Villanova put its foot down from there as Kris Jenkins nailed three 3-pointers in just over two minutes and Darryl Reynolds’ jumper pushed the advantage to 30 with four minutes left.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Golden Eagles G Matt Carlino, who scored 26 points in an opening-round win over Seton Hall on Wednesday, was held to five on 2-of-11 shooting. … Villanova has won its last two games by a combined 72 points. … Marquette has dropped 13 of its last 16 games.
