scored 15 points as the Hurricanes wrapped up non-conference play with a home rout.
Sheldon McClellan added 11 points and Tonye
Jekiri had eight points and eight rebounds for Miami (10-3), which decisively ended
its two-game losing streak. Miami had as many 3-pointers (seven) as turnovers
and had 18 assists on 23 made baskets.
David Wishon matched his career high with 10
points off the bench to pace Charleston (5-8), which hit a season scoring low
for the second straight game in losing its fourth straight overall. Joe Chealey added eight points, but leading scorer Canyon Barry drew a blank on
0-for-4 shooting while collecting a team-high seven rebounds for the Cougars,
who shot 29.4 percent from the field.
Charleston started ice cold in South Beach,
missing its first nine shots and not scoring until the 11:12 mark of the
opening half. Miami also started slow, hitting only one of its first 10 shots
but quickly heated up in the paint and took a 32-12 lead into the break.
The Cougars’ Adjehi Baru scored the first basket
of the second half, but the visitors would wait nearly six minutes for their
next field goal as the Hurricanes built a 45-14 lead. A Rodriguez 3-pointer
with a little less than 7:45 remaining gave Miami is largest lead at 59-25, and
Charleston would only get as close as 26 points the rest of the way.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Barry is the youngest son of Hall of Famer
Rick Barry, Miami’s all-time leading scorer, who watched the game from courtside.
… The 12 first-half points allowed by the Hurricanes were the fewest they have
allowed since the 2004-05 season. … Miami will open ACC play Saturday at home
against No. 3 Virginia, which improved to 12-0 by beating Davidson 83-72 Tuesday.
