No. 3 Gonzaga 68, Saint Mary’s 47: Kevin Pangos scored 14 points and Przemek Karnowski scored 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting as the Bulldogs shot past the Gaels in West Coast Conference play to win their 35th consecutive home game.
Kyle Wiltjer added 11 points and three steals as Gonzaga (19-1, 8-0) extended its winning streak to 12 games. Domantas Sabonis collected 13 rebounds to go with seven points to help the Bulldogs own a 36-28 rebounding edge.
Brad Waldow had 14 points and seven rebounds for Saint Mary’s (15-4, 7-1), which had a nine-game winning streak snapped. The Gaels tied a season low for points and shot 36 percent from the field, 2-of-15 from 3-point range and 9-of-15 from the free-throw line.
The contest was tight with less than 12 minutes left until Gonzaga reeled off 12 straight points to take a 49-34 lead with eight minutes to play. Kerry Carter scored for the Gaels to temporarily halt the blitz before Pangos scored seven points during a 10-0 burst to make it 59-36 with 4:42 remaining.
Five straight points by Gary Bell Jr. gave Gonzaga an eight-point lead late in the first half before the Bulldogs settled for a 27-21 lead at the break. Gonzaga increased the lead to 10 early in the second half before Saint Mary’s moved within 37-34 on a 3-pointer by Garrett Jackson with 11:48 remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pangos (1,635) moved into sole possession of 10th place on the Bulldogs’ scoring list, breaking a tie with Richie Frahm (1,621 from 1996-2000). … Waldow (806) became the fourth player in Saint Mary’s history to exceed 800 career rebounds. … Gonzaga G Eric McClellan, a transfer from Vanderbilt, made his team debut and scored two points.
