No. 20 West Virginia 83, NC State 69: Juwan Staten led the way with 24 points and six assists as the Mountaineers held off the Wolfpack in the Gotham Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Devin Williams added 16 points and eight rebounds for West Virginia (10-1), which registered its third straight win. Jaysean Paige scored 11 points off the bench and Jonathan Holton hit a pair of key 3-pointers for the Mountaineers.
Trevor Lacey scored 24 points and Anthony Barber added 16 for N.C. State (9-3), which shot 55.6 percent but turned over the ball 23 times. Ralston Turner added nine points for the Wolfpack.
Elijah Macon capped a 13-4 run and put West Virginia on top 67-57 with seven minutes to play. N.C. State cut the deficit to seven points, but Holton buried a pair of 3-pointers during a 10-3 burst as the Mountaineers put away the game.
West Virginia used a 19-6 run to grab a 37-24 lead before settling for a nine-point advantage at the break. N.C. State opened the second half with an 11-3 burst capped by Lacey’s 3-pointer to draw within 44-43 with 16 minutes to play, and his putback kept it a one-point deficit just in front of the midway point.
GAME NOTEBOOK: N.C. State went 8-for-14 from 3-point range while West Virginia hit 7-of-13 from beyond the arc. … The Mountaineers entered the weekend leading the nation in steals at 13.7 and made 10 against the Wolfpack, including three by Paige. … Staten was 10-for-17 from the field after shooting 32.7 percent in the previous four games.
