SMU 62, Michigan 51: Yanick Moreira scored eight of his game-high 19 points during a late 17-0 run as the visiting Mustangs defeated the Wolverines for their sixth straight victory.
Nic Moore contributed 17 points, three assists and two steals for SMU (8-3), which won for the first time in three road games. Ryan Manuel chipped in with six points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Mustangs, who held Michigan to 31.5 percent shooting from the field.
Zak Irvin led the way with 17 points and three steals for the Wolverines (6-5), who have lost four consecutive contests for the first time in almost four years. Mark Donnal registered 13 points off the bench and Derrick Walton Jr. had 11 while leading scorer Caris LeVert was held to four on 1-of-8 shooting for Michigan.
Moore drained three 3-pointers in the first half as SMU led by as many as seven before settling for a 30-27 advantage at intermission despite eight turnovers. Moreira scored seven as the Mustangs recorded nine of the first 11 points in the second half to push their lead to 39-29 with fewer than 16 minutes to go.
Michigan responded with 15 of the next 18 points, capped by 3-pointers from Walton and Irvin, to take a 44-42 lead with under 10 minutes remaining. Moreira’s dunk gave SMU the lead for good at 49-48 with 6:56 left and he had three other inside baskets during the late surge as the Wolverines went more than seven minutes without a point.
GAME NOTEBOOK: SMU F Markus Kennedy, who was academically ineligible the first semester, scored five points and grabbed three rebounds in his season debut. … The Wolverines were 50-4 on their home court – the Crisler Center – in the last four seasons until losing the last three. … The Mustangs had 44-27 edge on the boards.
