TCU 68, McNeese State 50: Kenrich Williams scored a career-high 13 points as the Horned Frogs knocked off the visiting Cowboys to set a record for the best start in school history.
Karviar Shepherd grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with six points for TCU (10-0), which eclipsed its win total from last season. Amric Fields and Trey Zeigler added eight points apiece for the Horned Frogs.
Shaun Johnson scored 12 points off the bench as McNeese State (4-3) fell to 0-3 on the road. Desharick Guidry had 11 points and 12 rebounds while Kevin Hardy collected 10 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Cowboys.
Johnson’s layup knotted it at 18 with eight minutes left in the first half before Shepherd’s jumper started a 11-2 run closing the half. Devonta Abron’s jumper pushed TCU’s lead to 39-24 less than four minutes into the second.
Johnson buried a 3-pointer and Guidry added a layup to cut it to 41-33 with just over 14 minutes left but McNeese State would not get any closer. Chauncey Collins sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around Williams’ layup in an 8-2 burst that pushed the lead back to 15 points and Zeigler’s dunk pushed it to 59-38 with just over four minutes to play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Horned Frogs tied the best start in program history with a win over Furman on Tuesday and they can keep the run alive next Saturday against Texas-San Antonio. … Cowboys F Austin Lewis blocked three shots, bringing his season total to 24. … TCU held McNeese State to 29.8 percent from the field.
