North Carolina State 86, Charleston Southern 50: Ralston Turner and Caleb Martin scored 17 points apiece as the host Wolfpack blitzed the Buccaneers at Raleigh’s Reynolds Coliseum – North Carolina State’s former home court.
Anthony Barber added 14 points and Abdul-Malik Abu had 11 for the Wolfpack (8-1), who won their ninth straight home game despite playing without leading scorer Trevor Lacey (ankle). Martin, a freshman, made his first career start in place of Lacey and hit 7-of-12 shots – including a trio of 3-pointers – and pulled down seven rebounds.
Cedrick Bowen had 14 points for Charleston Southern (5-3), which scored 27 fewer than their per-game average of 77.3. The Buccaneers, who only received nine points from leading scorer Saah Nimley (15.9 points per game), shot 30.5 percent from the field – including 2-of-21 from 3-point range – and were outrebounded (50-37) for only the second time all season.
Charleston Southern's Arlon Harper hit a 3-pointer for the first points of the game, but N.C. State scored the next 22 points, including 10 from Martin. In the meantime, the visitors went more than seven minutes without a point and almost nine without a field goal as the Wolfpack built a 27-4 lead over the opening nine minutes.
N.C. State hit 7-of-16 from 3-point range in the opening half and took a 46-20 lead into the break. Charleston Southern could only get as close as 24 points in the second half.
GAME NOTEBOOK: All eight of N.C. State’s wins in Raleigh have come by an average of 19.1 points. … The Wolfpack are 14-0 since they resumed playing select “Heritage” games at Reynolds Coliseum in 2002. … Charleston Southern, which entered the game ranked eighth nationally with 9.9 3-pointers per game, finished with the season-low two.
